Your a great inspiration to me on this “small win”. I’m going to have to pull in the vault and take a look at what is there. I’ve got Freight Train down (with the music sheet in front of me). But, to get the chords and picks down without the music is a great win. Congratulations!

Hi @campfire , I have both. My classical is 1/2 size so it actually fits my body better being smaller than my full size guitar. I use them both. To me, it’s just a different sound. Steel strings give a bright sound and classical nylon strings are more mellow. I agree with you…. I think you said it right, the classical gives a warm sound.

I agree with @Loraine, get a goal together. That will help you to start thinking about what you really want to learn. I picked a song for my 90 day goal, and I want to learn to fingerpick it. So I picked the courses that had to do with finger picking. Check out other members profiles to help give you an idea of what to do. Let me congratulate you on signing up for the fretboard wizard. It was an eye opener for me. In fact, I’m thinking of backtracking and going over some of the sections again. Good Luck.

Good job playing and singing! 90 minutes for a quick study! I don’t think I could ever do that. I can’t remember anything. I have to have the sheet music in front of me. Good job on your 100 day project.

You might want to invest in a guitar with a wider neck near the nut. Someone on the site made this recommendation… Take a capo and drop it down 4 or 5 frets so you have a wider neck area. See if that helps. A wider neck of 1 7/8” (47.6mm) might help you out. Keep in mind Classical guitars are wider. I bought a Cordoba ½ size and the neck (near the nut) is 48mm. Lot of room, nice soft strings to practice on too. Don’t think you have to spend a lot of money on a guitar either. Check out used or damaged guitars. Hope this helps.

HI @Gord001, I read in numerous posts about the fretboard wizard. I swear, once you start the last section called “Lets Write a Song” (something like that). You’ll have a light bulb moment. You might have to go back to a section here and there but it will happen. All the comments Tony makes in his videos will all start making sense. Just remember If playing the guitar was easy, everyone would do it. Well, we ain’t everyone. We are GUITAR GEEKS! You got this.

Hi @Dimebag, I agree with Alfred on the classical guitar. I picked up one so I could get in extra playing power without killing my fingertips. Talking about fingertips… that what should be holding those strings down. I saw that on one of Tony’s videos. Also… Is the width wide enough on your current guitar for your fingers? I know my Cordoba guitar(1/2 size) is a little wider than my full size Martin. One last idea, maybe drop down to a smaller guitar. I’m a girl (ok, old girl), so my Martin can be overpowering big at times. But, a parlor guitar is a tad smaller, then to continue sizing down is the 3/4, 1/2, 1/4. I have a full, 1/2 and 1/4 size. The 1/4 size is great for picking up when I’m at my desk. Right now I have my eye on a Taylor GS Mini which would be a 3/4 size. I played one at the guitar store and it was a perfect fit for me. Never thought of that before I joined this group. Don’t stop playing! Go to the guitar store and pick up the various sizes and give them a go (it’s free to try). Remember, you can do this.

  • I just have to stick to it and make it part of my routine.

  • Thanks, it really has turned into a journey. I bought my guitar OCT of 2020. I thought I would be way farther along than I am right now. Joining up with TAC in 2-2021 really has helped me out. I was started to get bored of just learning a song here and there. Now I’m concentrating on different methods. The daily challenges are a great motivator to get me going in the morning too. But, yes, I was totally geeked when I could figure out the chords to the song. First of many, I hope.

  • Thanks, the key is to keep practicing it. Just the TV commercial jingles and then figure out a solo to it. I just feel so good about putting something together. I have to go back through the course to figure out a few things. But, at the very least it does make some sense now.

  • Thanks, I was totally geeked. Make sure you take a lot of notes during the class to go back to. I swear I went over it a few times before I understood it. I finally had to put a “HELP” on community support to get through it. Now, I think I am going to keep trying to figure out simple songs so i can get a solo going.

It’s ok if it gets marked up. That means it’s truly yours. Look at Willie Nelson’s guitar, it’s a classical guitar and it’s truly has that vintage beat to heck look 🙂
