Memorizing a song a day is a lofty goal. I found that on my Friday afternoon hikes of 4-6 miles I would take along song lyrics and sing a verse and work on memorization — it was a way to combine the two. Lately, I have been hiking with my 35 year old daughter and 3 granddaughters and we may get a verse of This Old Man or You Are My Sunshine.

Thanks for your story Ted.
Liked Freight Train and will have to find the Mississippi John Hurt lessons. I have listened to his albums and tried to play some of his music on the baritone ukulele (DGBE) and had some success and now that I have since started guitar with TAC I look forward to trying the real deal. I learned finger picking on the bari and now my fingers need to develop muscle memory for 2 extra strings. I play with my fingers and playing up-down style with finger took a while to develop. I like to play Red Haired Boy, The Girl I Left Behind, St Anne’s Reel, and Carter’s Tune that I learned from Wayne Henderson at music camp a few years back. INTENTION is something that keeps getting ratcheted up.

Dennis:
Congratulations on one year. I am 3 months in and my fingers still need breaks. I decided to read the anniversary stories to see what people feel they are gaining. Looks like you have used this last year to your advantage. Awesome that you are also overcoming some physical challenges.

Earl –
You have a lot going on. Getting good callouses is a win.
Know a good set-up and having a quality instrument is another win.
Getting a lifetime membership and knowing that you’ll never quit is another win.
I have been going for about 3 months not and playing regularly and the callous have developed but the fingertip still get sore if I hold any chord too long.

Michelle:
Balance is always a good thing. Have him check out a Theremin and he can play along! Look ma, no hands! I have a lot of ukulele playing friends and the good thing about a uke is it has very forgiving nylon strings. He might like and join in. Now you can chuck the TV.

Life throws us curveballs. But the love of music keeps us coming back. I agree with the happy place comment.
Congratulations,

Congratulations on getting so close to your goal. I enjoy fiddle tunes too. I think that they’re fun to play and memorization is a great aspiration. I have learned Red Haired Boy, Carter’s Tune and play them from memory. I am so close to St. Anne’s Reel. I learned these fingerstyle on a nylon-string baritone ukulele and since they are on the DGBE strings I can carry them over to guitar. Thanks for bringing this up.

Hey jayb.
I have the same feeling. I go back and forth. Sometimes I go back to playing the simplest chords. It’s best to know both. Sounds like your confidence is building.

Hello Michelle – It’s my first time looking at the forums. I wanted to see what your project was about. You play and sing very confidently. I noticed the uke hanging from your shelf. I started playing uke about 15 years ago. Then I focused solely on baritone ukulele for ten years. I bought a tenor guitar to get used to steel strings. Now, I’m 2.5 months into serious guitar focus. 🤠 Jeff

I think I need to find that finger stretcher video too. Those maj7 chords are beautiful. Congratulations.

What instrument take zero practice? Dare I say, the Kazoo?

Thanks for the support John. This is a very active community with plenty of conversation about the daily challenges.

Thanks for the support. I do need to put myself out there although I don’t need to perform BUT I need to perform in order to challenge myself. I do continue to switch between guitar, tenor guitar (DGBE) and baritone ukulele. The percentages are learning hard toward guitar now. 85/10/5. But with the similarities in tuning all practice works toward improvement.
Also, since you have a baritone ukulele you may like to look at the blogs created for bari-uke. You can Google ‘Humble Baritonics’ or ‘The Bad-Ass Baritone Ukulele’.
