Yeah, I agree with the girls, @Loraine and @Cadgirl , @Skyman , it’s pretty awesome that you recognize the benefit of the dailies in stead of being put off by them. With that attitude, you will have fun. And because you have fun, you will make better progress. It’s totally amazing and opposite of my negative nature, but I’m learning to be more positive. This site has really helped me beyond guitar and music. I’m not sure the dailies will ever be easy for me. But that means I will always grow by doing them.

I just love to hear how TAC has helped and inspired different people, @xiao-bai . Thanks for sharing your story and guitar journey with us. Very inspiring.

I am so happy that TAC has gotten you back into the joy of guitar and song writing. I wish you all the best with your goal of writing songs and getting the help of your buddies to record the songs. What a wonderful journey you have ahead of you.

First, @ted_h , that’s one impressive 1st TACiversary. I’m really glad the bypass went well for you and really glad the bonus of that situation was to get you back into guitar and get you here to TAC.

I am very impressed by how thoroughly you threw yourself into your guitar journey. You have a lot of big wins in that list. Bravo.

I also very impressed by how well you played “Billy in the Low Ground”. You were a lot better than I was when I first got here. So, being that good, I wondered if your improvement would really be that significant.

Yep, and Wow, and Congrats. Your last video was truly amazing. Great job Ted. So, why haven’t we seen you at our VOMs?

Ah, then I saw your next post about your goals for next year. There are 2 things that can be hugely challenging for some guitar players. Sing and playing at the same time is a very common challenge. And then, playing in front of others is another very common challenge. It’s very easy for me to think that someone who can play as well as you can would be able to sing and play in front of others no problem. But it turns out, that playing ability has nothing to do with being able to do those 2 things.

I know you will make progress on singing and playing in front of others. You have already overcome challenges larger than either one of those 2 things. I look forward to seeing more of your progress.

So, as usual, your TACiversary post is one of the best I’ve seen. I always really appreciated your contributions to the community, @AttyTJ . I love that you kept track of your goals for last year and were able to see the progress you made and what you still need to work on. I guess it makes sense that keeping track should have been obvious, but that’s why the community is so helpful, because I miss an awful lot of things that “should” be obvious.

Of course, the second thing that occurs to me is that I hadn’t seen your TACiversary post and responded until now. I am surprised and need to put more effort into the TAC forum and less effort into the JMG forum. I owe TAC for everything that my guitar journey encompasses and want to give back. JMG is a wonderful VOM receptacle, but I don’t feel it deserves my time and effort like TAC does.

Ok, so time to get down to the Congrats, Bravos, and Kudos. Great job, buddy, and I’m really happy that I have had the privilege of being one of the people in your guitar journey and “Musical Universe”. It’s wonderful to see your progress and be a part of those who are making progress. How blessed are we?

Wow, I was hoping to help @stevieblues , but @Loraine already said what I would have said. And then @jumpinjeff beat me to giving further explanation.

But the real cherry on top is what @Carol-3M-Stillhand said. I hadn’t heard that one. I’m doing pretty well with my rake now, but it always helps to understand it more clearly.

So thanks for asking the question so that we all got Carol’s great insight.

Beyond that, I can only share my own progress on the rake. The first time I saw the rake, it took quite a bit of time and effort to get the correct sound even after I heard the part about rolling my wrist. And after I made the rake sound, I couldn’t reproduce it but once every 5 or 10 tries. Then, every time the lesson came around, I was able to do the rake a little easier and smoother and more consistently. Now, after being here 32 months, I was able, just this week, to make the rake sound right off the bat and do it every time. So, the same answer is the same as always: “practice and time”.

Keep up the good work, Stevie. Keep practicing, keep participating in the community and keep having fun.

    Hello Barry ( @bsevett ),

Welcome to TAC. The best guitar instruction site on the whole web in my opinion. So that’s the first bravo, for finding and joining TAC. (Small Win. 😁)

It sounds like you are actually doing very well. You are already having fun. That’s the number one ingredient to making progress, so bravo to you again. (Small Win 2 😃)

Then, you’re “not keeping up with the challenges”, but you did some looking around in the forum and you found the advice to “just keep progressing forward”. That’s actually 2 separate bravos. First, you used the community. Bravo. (Small Win 3 😄) Then you learned that we are simply “trying” and not “mastering” the lessons. One of the most difficult concepts for us to get when we first get here since it is so unusual but also one of the most important as our fun and steady progress is dependent on that attitude. So that’s a really huge Bravo. (Small Win 4 😍)

Then, before anyone comes over to your thread and gives you a reply, you find the “How to Get Started” video and decide you will go through the “30 Days to Play” course. That is another huge Bravo. (Small Win 5 😎)

But we’re still not done. I still have to answer the actual question. So, using the community to ask a question is itself a big win because that will allow you to benefit the most from TAC. So Bravo. (Small Win 6 😊)

Then, of course, there’s the part where you already guessed, correctly, what the answer to your question is. Yes, you have to “bookmark” every lesson you want to get back to. Except here, it’s called “favorite”-ing. You hit the little “heart” icon below and to the right of the lesson window. When you click on the down arrow beside you profile name, you will have an option to go to your “favorites”. So, Bravo for that. (Small Win 7 😉)

Have fun and continue participating in the forum community. We’d love to continue seeing your progress. Thanks for letting us know what’s going on at this time.

“That said– Seems like in here there are sometimes two different trains of thought on how to “learn” things- and even how to approach the Daily lessons.

(Very generally paraphrasing here)- I’ve seen posts that advise going slow with an emphasis on being VERY accurate; others feel more that the best way is to “give it your 10 minutes and move on”.”

    Hey Mark ( @the-old-coach )’

I just noticed this comment of yours. I guess you made it later even though it’s higher in the list because you made a “reply”. One of the “challenges” of this new platform is that it can be hard to follow things. Maybe it’s on purpose to keep the “chatter” down and force us to “stick” to the topic of learning guitar. Anyway…

I find this an interesting observation. But I wonder, can’t we be on both sides at once? I don’t see these 2 things as being mutually exclusive (if one is true, the other can’t be true).

When we work on something for 10 minutes, or an hour and a half, or several weeks, or even a year or longer (so, that covers all sorts of goals, long term, short term and in between), can’t we go slow in order to train our fingers to be as accurate as possible? And then, move on to something else without actually mastering that thing? I never saw the 10 minute minimum as a limit. I can work longer. And I can work very slowly and accurately.

Anyway, those are my thoughts on this. As always, it’s nice to hear other people’s understanding as it helps to refine our own understanding.

Let us know how it goes, @johnny67 , I know there are shorter thumb picks you can buy, but filing down is what I did because I already had thumb picks that I bought. But in the end, I used them at their original length. It was just a matter of getting used to the thumb pick.

Shorter sessions, more times a day is a really good way to practice, @Greer . But you don’t have to limit yourself to 10 minutes. But 1 1/2 hours is overkill. Maybe do 1/2 and hour a couple of times a day? Or maybe 15 minutes, 3 times a day? Whatever works. You don’t have to stop at 10 minutes, but don’t wear yourself out either.

I’m glad the advice is helpful to you.

Bravo for using the community, @campfire as that is the way to get the most benefit from TAC.

But I love that you updated us on how things went for you. What a great solution. I hope that you can have lots of fun with your sister and with your guitar playing.
