Hey @DrBob , I really like @That_Guy ‘s comment. However, I wouldn’t accuse you of over thinking because some of us think a lot, That’s not bad in and of itself. So, yes, anything that is part of your guitar journey, anything that is part of your practice, anything that is part of your playing, it all counts.
All that having been said, sometimes life gets busy and we really can’t spend anymore time than 10 minutes. That’s when this guitar routine saves our guitar journey. We still pick up the guitar everyday.
Now there’s the rub. If you really only have 10 minutes, and you choose to spend it working on tabs or organizing your binder, is that the best use of your precious 10 minutes?
All in all, I’m gonna have to get back to what That_Guy said. It’s not about keeping track of your time like it’s a chore that you can check off your list. If you really only have 10 minutes, then yeah, you’re gonna keep track of the time. But then, you better get straight to the lesson and spend your time doing that. You don’t need to waste time printing out the tabs or remembering lessons. If you simply spend 10 minutes everyday working on whatever the daily lesson is, you will see improvement in your guitar skills and you will be better at whatever you do with the guitar. You’ll play songs you’ve known for a long time cleaner and you’ll know how to add more variety to them.
But if you have the time to print out lesson tabs and organize them into a binder, why worry about how much time you are spending. The whole idea here is to get the guitar into your hands if possible. Sometimes, we need a break from the gutiar for a variety of reasons. Then, it’s a great idea to find something else to do that will contribute to your guitar journey.
One last thing; if you are asking what’s acceptable to mark a lesson complete, the suggestion is to spend a minimum of 10 minutes. No matter how well you did or didn’t do the lesson, no matter if you couldn’t even get all the way through it. But even the 10 minutes is not a rule, but a suggestion. The intent is to start the lesson and do what you can. If you logged in and put in what effort you could then you completed the lesson for that day.

After reading all the comments so far, @Guy_H , I can only repeat what others have said.
First, what @Fletch said, it’s a choice. If you focus on one thing, you’ll get good at that, but then you will be sacrificing something else.
So you choose singing and playing. Does that hamper your improvement? Yes, absolutely… IF you never practice guitar skills. But if you do the daily lessons, you are constantly working on your skills.
You can get really good at strumming, so good it seems like you simply don’t need to work on flat picking or finger picking. Ok, but then you are starting to stagnate right there. We must keep going, which means that eventually you will get so good at something you are working on now that you must start working on something else that you thought you weren’t interested in.
Anyway, that’s my take.

This was a great performance, @Omar_A.H. and because this was recorded during a Virtual Open Mic, this was a one take, live performance. To me, that is so much more satisfying to see and hear you do this live.
We have been using blogs to post our upcoming events. But now we have a new social media website that is very similar to the old TAC forums called justmusicgeeks.com. I would invite everyone to join this new forum so they can get the latest info on the Open Mics. And there is a lot of discussion about song writing and recording and home systems. All the extras we need to put the guitar chops we get from TAC to use sharing our own music with others.

Wow, that’s pretty cool @Marty69 . That’s really what all the lessons are about, right? So we can enjoy our guitars and music and play something pleasing that we can share with others. That’s your music, not someone else’s song. Thank you for posting; thank you for having fun; thank you for inspiring us by showing us where these lessons can lead to. Oh, and by the way, it’s no longer solo jamming since you posted this and shared.
And I like the loop. You sly dog, you.

That backing track will be tomorrow’s lesson @WAMGOC , so you got a jump on things. But figuring it out yourself by ear is an extra bonus lesson. And that’s really what music is all about, so that was an extra special lesson. Great job.

Wow, thank you so much @Guitargeezer-Jack for that glowing commendation. But it is a 2 way process. I, too, had a wonderful time and I look forward to more “non-virtual practice sessions”. And I gotta say, for a “novice”, you are pretty advanced.
Music needs to be shared. The old (and silly) question about the tree in the forest. If a tree falls and no one is there, was there sound? Of course there was, as sound is defined as compression waves in the air. However, could that sound be appreciated if no one was there to receive it and therefore hear it? Of course not.
So by it’s very nature, Music must be shared for the magic of music to be full. I am great-ful for this opportunity to have a musical interchange.

That’s the angle, @stevieblues . If you have both direction and fun then it is easy to play every day. And if you play everyday while having fun and direction, then you will make progress. It’s a very simple and satisfying formula. I’m glad you have found your guitar bliss.

It’s true, @JulieI , life can be hard. But then, along comes a little guitar tune to bring a little bit of mellow joy into our lives. I feel like saying welcome back. I know you never stopped, it’s just the forums slowed down a lot for a while.
Anyway, that was really sweet. Your skills keep growing. And that CEO-7 has such boom, it just sounded great. Thanks for posting.

Yah, you got it @Hendy . So you just went into your profile, right? Beside your profile pic at the top right, you clicked the little down arrow and then clicked on “My Profile”? Because if you didn’t do that your name must have appeared by magic. 🤣

Thank you @AttyTJ . I love the VOMs, but it is great when we can share music face to face. Hopefully, @Guitargeezer-Jack and I can do this some more. And maybe I can build another Jam Club. We’ll see. But this first contact was a blast.
As far as the mutual support and encouragement, that’s what I love about TAC. That’s what Tony has done for all of us, share his love of the guitar. We are passing that along when we can share with others.

Thank you @Kristin1 . Our guitar journey continues. We are way past the place when we learned an open chord in one particular position and fingering. I never dreamed, at that time, there were so many ways to make the same chord.
