I have been watching Angela Petrilli’s lessons lately and you’ve done her proud. It’s funny but I was at an open mic this weekend and a guy played this and I was thinking if it weren’t for the alternate tuning I’d probably know this one already (I play lots of acoustic Zep). Thanks for bringing the rock to TAC!

Technically the 10,000 hour rule is what makes you an “expert” at something. Is that more or less than “accomplished”? Seriously though, even Gladwell (the progenitor of the rule) has come out to say it’s been misinterpreted. Some things take physical skill that some will never achieve (ex. a 4 foot tall man isn’t going to be NBA material no matter what) and some people are born with a greater natural ability (ex. child prodigies). The REAL thing to focus on says Gladwell and the others is focused, dedicated practice on a regular basis. If all it took was 10,000 hours then we could have put a guitar in the monkey enclosure at the zoo and expect to come back some time later to find another Segovia. Ain’t gonna happen.

Interesting question to be sure. I’d say that if ALL you do is play songs then yes, you’re likely hampering yourself from learning new techniques (assuming your song list is limited and repeated). I don’t think there’s any one answer to the question though. Everyone is different. I have a friend who practices scales for hours a day. He’s a great soloist but not so good with rhythm. Is he a “skilled” guitar player. For sure. Just different skills than I possess as I seem to have a scale aversion.

I always go first to YouTube. There’s lots of creative people there making backing tracks in many genres. I just search “_________ (song name) backing track” or something more general like “Blues in E backing track” or whatever more specific thing you’re looking for. Sometimes it helps to put “backing track” in quotes like I just did. Good luck!

That’s great @johnny67! I know Tony did a lesson on posture a while back. It’s the most important neglected aspect of playing IMHO. Well, that and stretching – especially for us older players. Yes, Tony did a lesson on that too!

Acoustic Open Mic 10-08-2021 "The Wine The Beer The Whiskey"This was a great performance @Omar_A.H. as (partially) evidenced by my percussion attempts seen in the video. You did a fine job of it and I’m so glad @Daniel_Morin brought this tune to us and that you decided to learn it too. I know there was some short discussion of the chords but can you let us know what you played so we can also learn it? I think this will turn out to be a good Christmas song this year! 😜<b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>

That’s a common belief but mistaken. Unfortunately (or not) I know far more about this than I probably should. Don’t ask me how.

MemberOctober 27, 2021 at 3:26 pm in reply to: Rain Song for October – 90 Day Progress ChallengeI know. Alternate tunings are really cool and if it was done that way originally then it’s really hard to play in standard most times. I have to overcome this alt-phobia. 😜

I’m not so sure a van will help with the piano though. 😜

Don’t be so sure @AttyTJ. Without the music in front of me I truly have issues remembering when to change chords sometimes. Agreed though that playing a song (for me) is like juggling. One or 2 balls/chords is OK but throw in another one or two and it starts getting very messy, very quickly. 😉
