Detroit Moan
Posted by Fly on July 25, 2021 at 6:16 amHere’s my effort at Tony’s Detroit moan. Pretty pleased with how this has progressed there’s still a lot of finessing to do but really happy at the progress. I tried this a while ago but abandoned it as it was really hard to make it flow and not just sound like a string of random notes played at random points. Recently @Philb posted his cool version which motivated me to revisit about 2 weeks ago. It still felt like random notes but I decided to break it down and learn the phrases so rather than persisting trying to play the whole song once I was slightly familiar with it. I just set a timer and played the same bar over and over which took some discipline but I think it paid off. Definitely still work to be done on timing and cleaner notes but thought I’d share as I’m really happy and it shows some progress.

Cheers @albert_d @bill_brown @Marty69 & @Alisa nice to get supportive feedback and taking the time to take a listen. Yep it was definitely tough for me Alisa it’s like doing 6 Tuesdays licks back to back so not really difficult in isolation but to put them together and make them flow was the difficult bit. Still not managed it hopefully with more practice it will come. Cheers

Cheers @niels & @marisa your video posts motivate me to post.
I can’t look at my fingers as I still have to have to read the tab so the fingers have to fend for themselves even after going over it a million times I don’t even think I’m reading it’s just little prompts. I think maybe I need to work on memorising a bit more then I can really get into the groove but possibly with something a bit simpler to start off 😂 cheers

That was good! I did the same as you, working on section at a time. Although I did post a version (it was far from where I want it to be). I occasionally play it, and will work on it again until it flows. It’s great you stuck with it. There are parts I struggle with that you really flow in and are smooth. Sweet!

Cheers Phil, I think the key for me was changing those black bar lines in my mind and practicing half a bar into the next bar then The next half rather than just the bars or how Tony has them set out if you get me? When I was just learning a single bar over and over again I got good at that bar but then I’d stutter when I got to the next phrase making it all sound a bit unconnected. Cheers for posting your video it inspired me to give it another go. Have you worked out a way to repeat the videos for practicing it just plays through once for me then goes to the next one?

That sounded great @Fly not an easy song by any means!! I look forward to working on that one at some point, definitely will require a lot of practice!

I tried lots of guitars out but I think you always knew I was going to get a martin it’s like having my own custom headstock 😜 with the added bonus of it playing and sounding really good to me. Hope your keeping well ✌️
