Nobody Knows
My version is more like the American rap rock group Limp Bisket’s 2003 rendition in that it does not have the aggressive bridge and lyrics (with the prayer reference below). No worries – no rapping “Discover LIMP say it”. Tend to like songs with minor chords. Not really “a bad or sad man”, I just like how they sound. Actually, I’ve been very blessed in this life with loving family and friends. I have been with TAC since late March, 2021 so here is my third “Play for Us” forum submission. Maybe next time I will do a happy song.
Behind Blue Eyes” is a song by the English rock band the Who, recorded in 1971 released in November 50 years ago! It was the second single from their fifth album <b class=””>Who’s Next with a somewhat antisocial picture on the cover. The song was originally written by Pete Townshend for his musical project known as Lifehouse. (“Lifehouse Method” was a software system that Pete Townshend designed to generate unique pieces of music processed from various personal data of a user emotional inputs into a website interface.) The inspiration came from the “Tommy” tour. The website is now defunct but it brought some inspiration for the band in 1978, with aspects of the Lifehouse method revisited in the album Who Are You. In 2000, Townshend revived the concept in the “Lifehouse Chronicles”, a rock opera Pete Townshend worked on feverishly and then abandoned — due to outside tinkering and betrayal — between the issues of Tommy and Quadrophenia. Impress your friends by knowing that tidbit of rock music trivia.
What does behind blue eyes mean?
It is written from the point of view of the “villain” character (within the “Lifehouse Chronicles” rock opera project), showing even bad people have emotions like the rest of us.The “behind blue eyes” refers to the thoughts and feelings of the villain, in his head, behind his eyes. Like any song lyrics, how you interpret it is up to you, or it may have a special meaning for you, and that is all good.
However, here’s reportedly a more personal version of the song’s meaning:
At a concert Pete Townshend allegedly became tempted by a female groupie, but he instead went back to his room alone, possibly as a result of the teachings of his spiritual leader, Meher Baba. Upon reaching his room, he read a prayer, the first words being “When my fist clenches, crack it open” that is within of the bridge of the original song.Sadly, Roger Daltrey lost his dog same day he recorded the vocals. 😩
