Anyone Belong to a Local Chapter of Guitars for Vets?
Posted by MisterBee on February 25, 2023 at 6:42 pmI reached out to Guitars for Vets to join a local chapter in my area.
I am awaiting a response from them.
Is anyone on the forum a member of a local chapter?

@MisterBee – I am not a vet and don’t belong, but I had a mid sixties Hollow Body Electric Epiphone sitting in the basement for many years that I never used. I was going to sell it, but instead reached out to the local (Central Jersey shore area) Guitars for Vets rep that I found on line to see if they accepted donations. Guy got back to me quickly and could not have been more appreciative.
He also hit me up to volunteer to teach, but I didn’t feel I was good enough and they also still had COVID protocols in place last year, so there was no in person interaction. However, I may now have enough confidence to take him up on that request to volunteer teaching. Will see.
Seems like a great organization. I first heard about it here on TAC.

ChuckS,
You had a wonderful experience with GFV; thank-you for sharing.
Today, I sent a follow-up email, so I hope to receive a response soon from either the local chapter or the national rep.
I am not a veteran. I would like to pay it forward. My dad’s oldest brother was killed in the airforce in Texas during WWII doing basic fighter maneuvers. My brother was born first, so he is named after him.
Have a great day.

@MisterBee – I am sure you will hear back shortly. The local rep on this end told met that he has seen Vets dealing with PTSD and other issues make huge progress in recovering by having the guitar to focus on. Said 10 guitar lessons were better than a year of professional help in some of the cases he had dealt with.

@MisterBee you are lucky there is a chapter near your location… I think they will answer your email, just give some time… I think there are ways to start up your own chapter if you are so inclined. I’m not sure the process as they might require the coordinator to be a veteran, who knows? If I get brave, I may see if I can volunteer to play guitar at a VA home. I think the activities director there would be a good person to make friends with as a starting point.
Our Veterans deserve sooooo much for their bravery and sacrifice. G4V is a wonderful organization to help these dear folks. Best of luck with your journey!!

I contributed a guitar I won here to GFV back in the old days with the Guitar Raffle.
Never heard back anything as to where it went.Quite disappointing.
I am sure a Vet somewhere is enjoying that guitar.A follow up would have been much appreciated!!!

James,
Perhaps to protect the recipient, GFV did not contact you. However, they should have at least thanked you for the donation.

@MisterBee Id be interested too in whether you heard anything back from your local GFV. I Tthink the emails are monitored by volunteers, so if you haven’t heard back from them, there may not be a volunteer available at your local VA. Suggest you contact the main GFV site and ask rttheir assistance. They have an application that you complete and send in.

No reply from GFV.
In February, I contacted Bailey King, the director of operations at GFV HQ. She was supposed to get back to me, but did not.
I contacted the local chapter rep in my area, which Bailey suggested. Once again, no reply.

@MisterBee I’m sorry you’re having such a difficult time contacting GFV. I’ve heard good and bad regarding communication from the different locations. I think most are run by volunteers, and that might explain why no one has gotten back to you. Have you considered going to their location, and talking in person?. Also, I think there is an application online at the main GFV website that you can download, fill out and send it to them.
There are several TAC members that have indicated they teach at GFV. The 2 that come to mind may or may not be TAC members still. I’m tagging them just in case they still are. Maybe they’ll chime in.

An hour ago, I revisited the GFV national website. I did not find a downloadable application.
If the director of operations at HQ and the local chapter volunteer did not reply, I suspect they are not proactive in searching for volunteers.
I suppose I will take my professional teaching talents elsewhere. . . .
