Tony plays this at the beginning of the lesson at a blazing speed that is intimidating. He teaches it at a very slow pace to learn, and then you can increase the speed over time. I learned it, memorized it, and am quite a bit faster than lesson speed, but also quite a bit below Tony’s bluegrass blaze. It sounds different at different speeds. It seems like a series of riffs; like the part in a bluegrass song where the guitarist solos. At Tony’s speed though, it flows together. At my speed it seems a little clunky in some parts/transitions; but that is where I’m at. I had a glitch toward the end of the video; but my picking wrist and hand were getting too stiff after playing it multiple times. It was great for working on flat picking techniques. I will take a break from it. It is what it is at this point. 😜

Your accuracy and speed was quite impressive in the first half @Philb. sometimes, returning to a piece after a little break is the perfect thing. ✌

@Loraine Thank you! It was fast for me. Amazing to me how Tony played it.
@Bill_Brown Thanks Bill! A lot of repetition and practice to get to this place even.
@Marisa Thanks! I agree. Time for a break. I found my hand and fingers getting fatigued and stiff as the song went along. I can’t do anything about the arthritis, but I hope to just built up endurance to make it the best I can.

Thanks to all of you for taking the time to listen!

This is a speedy flat picking extravaganza. You are tackling well here @Philb ! You have done a great job getting it down at a nice speed. I agree somewhere between the teaching version and Tony P’s bluegrass shred seems to be a good compromise! Thanks for sharing. Made me think about going back to the song book, to dig out one of those tunes as well🎶

PhilB, I have not heard Tony’s lightening blaze but you did great! Getting it slow and right is the hardest part. Sounds like you are ready to faster if you want! Great work.

@stevieblues Thanks for listening, and the kind words. Yeah, I have that old age thing going on. Have to accept it and do the best with it. 😀
I will keep on pickin’; you also!

@Butterfly Thanks! Just a lot of practice, accepting our own limits, not letting imperfection keep me from doing it day by day, and putting in the time. I spent a little time on it every day for longer than I care to admit
Starting out at a “mature” age, and having the limits of that; I had to learn to enjoy the process and see the improvement come in increments (and not compare). The best to you in your journey.

@Dirk_R The Songbook used to be a part of TAC. It isn’t anymore. You had to pay separately for it. It included step by step instructions on a lot of songs (from beginner to hard), for both flat and finger picking. Those who had bought it before still have access to it. I am not sure if it is possible to get now, but you could ask.
