Creating melody from modifying chords and hammering on
Posted by Moonhare on May 8, 2022 at 8:47 amMy thumb is bleeding – that is how dedicated I am to my guitar routine this weekend!
So in my usual way of taking inspiration from lessons learned in the daily challenges of the week, then writing a piece of music to put them into practice I have a short instrumental that I will grow into a full piece over the next few weeks. This is another of those “Work in Progress” vids that demonstrates why I still need lessons! But we all know now that pushing out of our comfort zones, even if we’re not quite there yet, will continue to improve our skills. And to be honest, despite the fluffs I really love this tune.

Wow- I get to be the first to reply!
Moonhare- that was nothing short of fantastic….period.
Hypnotic and captivating– kind-of pulls me in.
I (we) can’t WAIT to see more videos as you keep working on this. Please post more.
Wow…… I have yet another new goal…… like I don’t have enough already……
Thanks for posting this…… it’s great.

Thanks a lot. I think the fun thing is putting the skills into practice no matter whether they’re entirely under your fingers already. This would have been impossible for me to play a year ago so it’s good to know TAC is working. 🤟😎🎸

I like it 👍👍 @Moonhare I like where you’re going with it🤩 The slide based riff in the middle sounds really nice along with that percussive beat, great stuff👏👏👏 Can’t wait to hear the finished product🎼🎼 Take care of that thumb😎
-
Thanks Bill. I have worked around a loop of the two parts and that seems to work nicely but my poor thumb has taken a pounding!

Nicely done putting into practice this week’s lessons @Moonhare (Darren). Now, the lyrics to that melody?
-
I think it would take a lyric in it’s longer form that I’ve now worked out. Perhaps a revisit in a month or two.

The weird thing is I can now play it a lot faster after practicing but it doesn’t sound anywhere near as good as the more laid back tempo. 🤔

Thanks a lot. I’m hoping I can play this at a future VOM even if I am still a little bit shaky on some chord changes still.

That was awesome Moonhare! You’re very dedicated to play guitar with a wounded thumb. Really like the sound of this one. I’ll be looking forward to the finished song. Keep on playing the guitar! 👏😎

Couldn’t work out the thumb blister at first then picked up the guitar again and the light bulb went on 💡 That’s soft piano player hands for you🎹! Got to toughen up a bit for this guitarist malarky!

Thanks. I’m working on getting that bend a bit more consistent now.

Great Playing and I appreciate your explanation of how you developed that catchy driving pattern! (Sorry about the thumb injury, but the percussive technique you were using really added to the tune).
-
Yes I need to toughen up my thumb because I love that percussive style.

That was awesome! It’s nice seeing what other geeks do with the lessons learned!!! Thanks!
-
I will definitely take that as a compliment coming from you. 😊

Excellent sound; great technique! You are getting a lot of music out of those shapes. Inspiring!
-
Amazing what you can do with what are very basic cowboy chords.

That is a fantastic application of modified chords, @Moonhare – creating all of that from 2 chords modified with hammer ones and pull offs really demonstrates what can be done! Loved the rhythm you are making with the strings with your right hand – and get a plaster for your thumb!
You are a very talented and inspiring person!

😂 I think the thumb is healing up now. But yes you’re right about the variety you can get from such basic chords. I have to be creative because I still can’t master barre chords. I hope that will come in year 2.

@Moonhare that is fabulous, I love everything about it. The percussive aspect really adds another dimension. Can’t wait to hear the final version!
-
Yes, I’m getting pretty close now. Going to try it out with UK TAC members at an in person guitar weekend in about 8 days.

-
that sounded great Moonhare! You have excellent technique and a wonderful sense of rhythm, plus an intuitive gift of melody – makes for some really good music!
-
Thanks so much. I think that you gave to be a bit more creative when you still don’t have the full toolbox of guitar chords at ypur fingertips but you can still make good tunes even with standard chords.

Don’t worry…each new layer of skin will be tougher! 💪🏼 I love that percussive style! You sound great! 👍🏼
