So on Saturday (6/26/21), I attended my 3rd VOM, 1st time for the SNL VOM. The theme was “somewhere you want to go” and I played “Hotel California” because I would like to go there (to Wine Country). When I started to play, I didn’t feel nervous because I’d played the song in front of family earlier in the day and went through it without any problems. Well, somewhere in the 3rd verse, I completely forgot the lyrics and for the life of me couldn’t remember what they were. It was a real brain freeze! I stopped playing and apologized to the attendees. My chest was really pounding and my fretting hand was shaking. Everyone was very kind and telling me that I did a great job etc., when I heard someone say the next verse. I immediately started playing and singing from that point and finished the song – with a little help from my (TAC) friends.

My #small win was being reassured that everyone there wanted to help me. Thank you to the host and attendees – I couldn’t have finished without you all!👏👏👏

I love that about TACers, and you did do great. It is so nerve wracking to play in front of others, and we’ve all been in similar situations.

Yes @Loraine , my nerves got wracked when I suddenly couldn’t remember the next verse. I have played that song a bunch of times in front of family and friends. But I couldn’t have recovered without you and everyone else’s help!

It happens to all of use but you played on Bill. That’s all that matters! Bravo!

Bill, so great! Sounds real – brain freeze, lyrics provided and off you went. My hat is off to you! The freezing is a fear of mine and your example gives me courage to be real, right wherever I am when playing. Thanks!

Yes @andy_e , brain freeze😱! But the greatest thing is that everyone was very encouraging, even though I flubbed! I was extremely grateful for their kind words in the midst of my debacle. That’s what allowed me to continue when I did hear someone say the next line👍

Bill, what is VOM? I am looking for my own brain freeze opportunities. Andy

Hi @andy_e , perhaps this will help:

Try attending a “Virtual Open Mic” (VOM). This is not officially supported by TAC but is created entirely by amazing & dedicated TAC members. See the schedule & learn how it works here.

All the info is in this link, or you can also find it by clicking on the “Play For Us” Forum heading at the top part of the Forums page. The information is in the literature at the top of the 1st page – check it out👍

        Hey @andy_e

They aren’t happening this weekend because of the holidays (Independence Day & Canada Day), but they’ll be back next week (I believe) and you can “sit in” on them and not have to perform, to see and understand how things work – it’s lots of fun🤩

My experience, Lyrics are there so you can forget them as you play the chords brilliantly (or the runs and melodies for finger style.)

(And by the way, the chords are there so you can forget them as you sing the lyrics brilliantly.)

It happens, and is part of making the song your own.

Hi @AttyTJ , Thanks for your insight and kind words👍, I definitely made that rendition my own🤔 I know you were one of the attendees, but you may have had to leave before I played – you missed a good one🤣

Huge win Bill, playing in front of people is my greatest challenge I play perfectly when I’m alone, then even when it’s just family it all goes out the window, but I keep trying!

    👍
