  • I year down!

Posted by Brian2501 on November 12, 2021 at 10:27 pm

I just competed a year and reupped …missed very very few of the daily challenges and that has been a positive thing. Been totally incorporated into my lifestyle.

My main frustration with the course is that I do not feel like all this time is producing anything tangible…if a week (or a month) of challenges could culminate in learning a new song that would be so so much more satisfying.

Sure my skills are improving (incrementally- but that’s my fault )but I have yet to really see it pay off when I am trying to learn a new song.

I know there are songs on this website and infinite other places to learn them…but the whole idea is to spend the 10 mins plus a day on a challenge and I just would like it so much more if that week of playing ended up with my being able to play a new song.

I am giving it another year because I like that it disciplines me to keep up the routine, I like Tony’s upbeat persona and there are true gems in this community. I d not want to discount his lessons…they are very good and well presented.

Regarding this next year on TAC

Play along more at the different speeds (I did not do that hardly at all)

    Upload 3 videos a quarter

    take the skills courses

    Outside TAC

Continue to sound out a tune a day and write out the notation

Continue to work my way through the Frederick Noad Classical gutar book,

    Learn more songs of course.

    Happy 1st TACversary @Brian2501

What you need to add to your next years list is to find a song or songs you like and learn it. What Tony teaches us is the “wax on” “wax off” (Karate Kid) guitar playing. It’s up to us to apply it to songs we learn. Do the daily challenges and play a song at the end of practice. Take the song learning to the next level. Memories it! 😊🧙‍♂️😎

      Dear Marty

Thanks for reading my comments…and your thoughts.

Yes I do learn songs on my own..and that is more rewarding and frankly more edifying to me than doing the 10 minute lessons that are soon forgotten. If somebody asked me show me what you learned in the past year on TAC…what would I show them?

That is not to say that I do not like the TAC plan, I obviously do or would not have signed up for another year. It got me in the habit of playing every day, setting goals, being part of a community. That has been very valuable to me.

I just think it could be exponentially better. Think how great it would be to be able to apply those pull offs, triplets, open tuning, scales etc to something we could really use.

Your advice is right on though, using this plan to complement other goals is a good one. Again thanks for taking the time to read and comment on my post!

Record something now… anything… put it away and in about 9 to 10 months listen to it. You will be surprise how far you have come. It’s like not being able to see the trees because of the forest. Just my 2 cents. 😊🧙‍♂️😎

Hi @Brian2501 , I agree that bringing these daily challenge lessons together (like the lessons last week – which were awesome) would be very beneficial to our journey, however I feel that TAC doesn’t want to lead us down a particular path. I feel that TAC is giving us the tools to go down our own path😱 I agree with what @Marty69 is saying👍👍 You’re getting the tools here to take your journey wherever you want it to go🤩 Tony has promised new content with the new format – perhaps we’ll see more week’s lessons like last week🤔 – where things come together at the end🤩 – but in the mean time, I’m seeing progress with daily practice and putting new techniques into my playing “toolbox”😎🎸😎 and very happy about that🤩

    Hey @Brian2501

    Congrats on a year.

    Congrats on signing up again.

    However, you said:

“My main frustration with the course is that I do not feel like all this time is producing anything tangible…if a week (or a month) of challenges could culminate in learning a new song that would be so so much more satisfying.”

There are many sites on YouTube and that’s mostly what they do. Why did you spend the money to reup? You can learn songs all day long for free.

“Yes I do learn songs on my own..and that is more rewarding and frankly more edifying to me than doing the 10 minute lessons that are soon forgotten. If somebody asked me show me what you learned in the past year on TAC…what would I show them?”

What I hope for you during the next year is that you can answer this question yourself. I think you have missed the whole point of the TAC program if you can’t answer this question now. One of the big facets of the TAC method is small wins. Actively look for those incremental improvements and celebrate them and share them with us. Had you done that, you wouldn’t wonder what you could “show for it”.

Lastly, most instructors teach songs because that’s what most students want. And those students stay students forever and continue needing someone else to arrange songs for them so they can play them. The reason I believe TAC is the best guitar instruction site available is because after 2 or 3 years with TAC, it is common to be able to arrange your own cover songs, or even write your own songs. And you can play even the songs you already knew with much more polish and style and embellishment.

I’m happy that you’ve done TAC for a year. I’m happy that you signed up again. I’m sad that you are unable to see and explain and show what you have gained. But I know you have gained something from TAC. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have signed up again. What’s sad is that you can’t see it.

      Hey Mike

Thanks for taking the time to comment on my “rant”! I see you have been a member for years (and believe it or not I was in W/S 2 weeks ago! – we live in Charlotte)

I appreciate your giving me hope that the hours spent on TAC will eventually pan out into something more than small wins…

It is not an either or situation….lots of grey…I love the fact that I have been motivated to play everyday…and I also appreciate learning what he teaches…

The last week showed some progress in at least tying the 5 lessons together… I also like that he he shows a purpose for the Tuesday riff lessons. As good as it, in my view the TAC program could be so much better.

BTW…I keep hearing about this fretboard wizard…which is not being offered these days…have you taken it? Is it a live class and therefore limited?

Mike…thanks again for sharing your opinion…I appreciate it indeed!

Congratulations on your TACiversary Brian2501! 👏

I think the main thing is that you are constantly learning. Stick to your guitar routine, and try to learn something new everyday. I hope you enjoy your guitar journey. 🎸

Hello Brian, I think you are where a lot of us find ourselves after a year. There is a feeling of “what next?” I’m giving some thought to my plan for next year and how I will use TAC to improve and what I’ll use outside of the daily challenges. Just know you aren’t alone in making some progress but being at risk of being “stuck” again. I’m going to post my own TACiversary story soon.

      Hi Mark

Thanks for your comments…I have been having mixed feelings about my decision to reup for a year. It actually does seem like Tony is incrementally improving on the lessons in that they seem to come together a bit more. There are a couple of sites that I used in the past that I actually felt were much better in terms of content. I also took about 6 months of classical lessons which were so much more productive….

Having said all that…I am really motivated everyday to do my “10 mins”…it is totally part of my routine….and I look forward to it and appreciate the “small wins” .

It frustrates me because as good as it is it could be so much better. It would be nice to have a “big win” incorporated ie learn a beautiful song incrementally from start to finish that I could play for my wife or a grandkid!

Best of luck to you…be curious to hear what you decide to do.
