Posted by KevinZ on November 10, 2021 at 8:35 amI was asked to do a gospel song so I sat down and worked out this one I did improv notes learned the words overcame my singing and playing notes for the longest time I could do 1 or other but not both at the same time but I kept at it so I guess it is my small win hope you like my version

Definitely a nice win @KevinZ ! I’m not familiar with the song, but I enjoyed it. I’m curious about your strumming hand. You always do a hybrid picking/strumming technique, which I really like. It looks as if you’re only doing so on the top strings. What exactly do you do? I’d like to try and duplicate it and have some fun. 😁

Thanks @Loraine the pattern I use the most on 4 count songs is TITR so on a C chord for example 1st T or thumb is on the C note on the A or 5th string next Index on the open G string next Thumb on the E note of D or 4th string then 4 count to the C on the B string with the ring finger and you just repeat it the ring finger can play the C note on the B string or the open E of the 1st string depending on what sounds better for the song I use other patterns for dynamic effect but this one TITR the most hope that helps you with the flat pick I pick the same patterns of strings also can add string pinches on the 4 count for dynamics remember the trick is to play the root notes of the chord be it a C F G E A what ever play the root notes available hope this helps feel free to ask questions anytime I know what it is like trying to get better keep on pickin and have fun thanks for taking a listen and the support

Really nice playing and singing (as usual) @KevinZ 👏👏👏 A wonderful performance – you’d never know that you initially struggled with putting this together😱 and the outcome is this awesome small win👍👍 I really enjoyed listening (and watching)🤩 I liked seeing how you went from playing chords to using single notes and back all throughout the song – seamlessly – using that finger style which you’ve perfected 😎 and your singing – you really put your heart and soul into all of your performances, which is why I find them all very enjoyable👏👏👏 Thanks for posting Kevin🎸

Thanks for the detailed info @ Kevin. I’m at a loss how to choose picking patterns for most songs, and I’ve always enjoyed your style. I’ll practice it and see if I can’t get it down. 😁

I know your pain @Loraine it took me a long feel out process to find patterns that work for the songs I like finger style then do them also with a flat pick my flat picking lags behind the finger picking but I keep at it using alternate picking when I can which is eaiser for me with the flat pick than my thumb but I keep trying to get the sound cleaner and faster smoother and heartfelt
