I don’t really understand how to improvise yet. It looks like you were using strings and frets that weren’t in the video. I’ve noticed that in other videos.

The challenge is just a scale. In this case a scale in the key of Em. For the improv, you can use the scale the way Tony shows you, or you can use it anywhere on the guitar you want. Just play through the scale, listen to the backing track and try and find a melody that speaks to you.
