Pink Floyd’s “Breathe” – my first YouTube video
Posted by Guitargeezer on August 2, 2021 at 1:00 pm“Breathe” by Pink Floyd has been seen to “embrace ecology”. This song is within the classic 1973 Dark Side of the Moon album along with the tracks “Time” and “The Great Gig in the Sky”. David Gilmour and Richard Wright were “craving out a more distinctive style” with the introduction of blues-based chords and solos. The meaning of the song “Breathe” is thought to be from an old man’s perspective describing the unfortunate working life a baby will have to face: “Run, rabbit, run. Dig that hole, forget the sun.” The song implies that we need to overcome these messages and do what inspires us (for me learning guitar late in life).
Clearly, the lyrics are much more personal for me at 69 than back when I was 22.
Been a TAC member since March 2021 and to achieve part of my progress goal I submit this version of “Breathe” for your helpful comments.

I would love to listen, but it is coming up as private. There is a Youtube upload link at the start of this ‘play for us’ section.

I’ll change the setting. New to all this and especially YouTube. Had difficulty getting it to download. Also I mistakenly set release time for tomorrow afternoon.
-
Setting now changed and video should be available now. Sorry for confusion. Marisa, you inspired me to give this forum a go.

@Guitargeezer I loved your rendition of that fabulous song! What a classic record! I still remember the first time I heard Dark Side of the Moon. I was playing tunes on a small college station (internal, not broadcast) in the south of England. Look forward to your next song!

Appreciate your kind words Ted_D. A couple I am working on are quite distant from Pink Floyd. Play On!

Thanks stevieblues. It taught me some new chord shapes. Played on my second acquired guitar, a Taylor 414 ce-R. 😃

Ted_h thank you. It is a first for me to play an instrument & sing too!
-
Wow @Guitargeezer, that’s incredible…you did great and get extra props for it being your first time! And, I agree with @ted_h… I love the tone of your voice!

Your comment is much appreciated @Marisa. I’ve sung in choirs for years and done many duets with my wife (she is blessed to have what I refer to as “the Disney princess voice”). Looking forward to the day when I am more proficient accompanying myself with the guitar. You clearly show me in your videos how practicing advances both vocal and instrumental abilities. As we play on . . .

Appreciate it Michelle. Was so impressed with your 100+ days project. My future video postings will not be as ambitious! With this first one I learned a lot about the mechanics of YouTube!

Wow, Jack, @Guitargeezer-Jack that was really fantastic.
I think you have some natural talent in music. You seem to understand how to use the guitar in a very musical and intuitive way. You did a great job of “outlining” the song and giving a lot of texture and variety. And of course, like others have said, your voice is able to stay in key and present the song in your own way. This was very enjoyable and entertaining. For your first video, wow. Great job.

Your kind words mean a lot to me Mike. Hope to post another soon.

Yes I really like this interpretation of one of my favourite Floyd tracks. The chords sound lovely and full and it’s not a straight copy of the original either – you’ve made some really wonderful choices on some of the transitions and made it your own. Glad you are posting on the forum. This is a great space for sharing our progress and playing. Cheers! 🤘😎🎸 Darren [Moonhare]

@Moonhare – Darren, I attempt to do my own interpretation of songs. Try not to parrot the original artists. Notice your “Play for Us” postings do much the same. I am finding the more I play the guitar it seems to express my psyche at that moment in time. Maybe an effort to reach within, perhaps into my soul.
Appreciate your comments. Look forward to your next song posting.
