Red Dead Redemption and the hybrid pick!
Posted by Moonhare on April 27, 2022 at 9:52 amDay 370 of TAC for me and my first “Play for Us” post for my second year.
At the weekends when I’m lost for a daily challenge I try to learn a new tune. This week Angela Petrilli was teaching us how to play Mrs Robinson (Simon and Garfunkle) and she demonstrated some wonderfully bluesy riffs using hybrid picking. Always up for a challenge I decided to write a tune based around hybrid picking and string bends (which I’m still trying to perfect). I had a blast and this is definitely going to be something I use a lot more now. I’d be interested to know whether you like the technique and if you use much hybrid picking in your music.

Having played RDR2 twice I really like your song Moonhare. 👍👍

Thanks Daniel. Hoping to play it at Scones this evening if I can get along. I played the original RDR and have RDR2 but haven’t played it through yet, life got in the way, so think I’ll give it a go. Just such an immersive world.

Very cool hybrid technique and background video. Enjoyed it Darren.

That was very cool Moonhare! I loved your composition and you played it with style and flair! I’m a big fan of read dead redemption – still haven’t finished red dead II but It’s a great game. I think Arthur Morgan would approve of your piece in the soundtrack – good music for a lone rider on the plains any time of day or night.

So good to hear from people who get it abd thanks for those kind words! I have pkayed RDR to death but only just started RDR2 so lots of good things to come.

If you haven’t tried red dead nightmare I highly recommend it and I am not a zombie fan

That was really great Moonhare! Some great hybrid picking. I’ve not tried hybrid picking yet. Great song! 👏😎

I still find it a little awkward but I’m starting to get there and it does mean you can do things that are not possible with the pick alone but then get back into some full on strumming. Worth the effort I think.

Thanks. A different vibe for me but I really enjoyed trying to get those techniques I’m not great at, into it. String bends I still find tricky.

I’m so envious of your artistic ability @Moonhare ! You have a genuine gift, and apI really enjoyed this.

Thanks. This was about the 8th take! It is still just outside my comfort zone but I love the effect so I’m going to persevere.

That was an awesome tune @Moonhare 🤩👏👏 I love the rhythm and sound that you created – fantastic👍 I’ve listened 3x (to this point😱) and enjoy it more and more each time😎 The video portion (to me) was just icing on the cake🎂 You’re journeying well my friend🎼

That’s awesome – thanks. I tried to play it at the Scones VOM last night. I knew it would be a challenge and I stalled a bit in the middle but managed to pick it up again and got to the end then without too many fluffs. Just need more practice hybrid picking as it does feel a bit awkward to start with but I love the way you can get a dual guitar lead sound with it. And yes I couldn’t resist the gunslingers in the percussive break in the middle!

Enjoyed the whole package! 😄 You are so creative, Darren. Interestingly, I am working on Peace Train by Cat Stevens, and have been trying hybrid picking on the lick! Thanks for your inspiration. ✌🏼

Ooh – can’t wait to hear that if you haven’t posted it yet. I think I will use this technique quite a lot once I have it locked down a bit better. I still stumble on it because it is a bit awkward, but I am totally in love with the dual guitar sound it creates. Worth persevering I think.
