Tony’s Acoustic Challenge – The New Way to Learn Guitar Family Forums Play for Us! “The Coming Storm” – Drone strings and double stops

  • “The Coming Storm” – Drone strings and double stops

Posted by Moonhare on February 10, 2022 at 2:35 pm

As we have spent some time learning about drone strings and double stops (basically two string chords – I love ’em!) I decided to put all that into practice and write a tune. I’m in standard tuning but capo on the second fret. This not only gives a brighter tone but also helps to lower the string action a little. I stupidly swapped out my wonderful light gauge 12-53 D’addario Nickel Bronze strings for a pack of 13-56 medium Martins after snapping a string and its making playing really difficult for me. Never again.

The theme here is a storm (internal or external) that keeps returning with greater ferocity each time. Dedicated to anyone facing challenges in their lives that seem overwhelming.

@Moonhare Wow! That was fantastic! You have a musical gift, and it’s so fun to hear and see you putting the foundational skills to functional use in songs. I think many of us struggle with how to do this. I look forward to continuing to watch and listen to your musical journey.

Thanks so much although you don’t know the problems I had getting this recorded. I was strumming so hard in the percussive bits that the pick kept either flying across the room or rotating between my fingers. I ended up having to blue-tac the pick to my thumb to get this version done! 😂

That was an inspiring instrumental @Moonhare 👏👏👏 I could feel the storm brewing (no pun intended). I had to join in and play some riffs with my Martin Custom Lights 11-52 Phosphor Bronze strung guitar. The riffs I played were in Bm pentatonic, seemed to fit OK with your progressions. I had a lot of fun, and enjoyed your work, Thanks for posting.

Is the Scones VOM tonight? Best of luck, break a string (again)😱

Thanks Bill. That key certainly sounds right as I was playing Am chord progressions with the capo transposing a full tone up. It would certainly benefit from a lead line so I’m glad you had some fun jamming along.

And stop taunting me with your light guage strings. I’m not in the mood! 🖕😎🎸

UK Primitive? Perhaps that should be my new handle on TAC 🤣!

That was a beautiful piece Moonhare! I really liked it and was very happy to hear that it resolved quite peacefully, i.e. the storm subsided. It was fun to play along with and try some improv on as well. Well done!

Thanks. It all came spilling out with new sections with slightly different ways of playing a similar theme appearing as I tried out different double stops.

Bravo 👏 Darren! @Moonhare. Your music brought back memories of sailing rough waters on the Atlantic while crewing on large yachts back as a teenager. The intensity, fervor and then ebb of the wind and sea comes through.

Thanks a lot. That sounds like an amazing experience! It is amazing how different images can be created by very simple chords and I’m glad it created the feeling I was going for..

Thanks. I have been punishing my fingers rehearsing and rewriting it so I can play it at the Scones VOM tomorrow. Hope I can get through it all in one go. Never played guitar at an open mic before. 🤞😬🎸

That would be awesome although I have a way to go as far as consistency of playing which I’m hoping will start to improve once I’m doing open mics. First one coming up this Thursday. 😬🎸

Really nice. There is something special about instrumental pieces. They seems to inspire more engagement in the song. Super well done.

Thank you for that. I totally agree that instrumental music has the ability to connect. That’s why I’m a Mike Oldfield junkie.

Really fun to listen to your composition, @Moonhare ! The chord progression with bass note accompaniment had really nice drive and musical momentum to it. I enjoyed the quietter passages as well. Thanks for sharing.🎶

Thanks a lot. I’ve continued to develop it further this week. Might play it at Thursday’s virtual open mic if time allows.

    Wonderful, Moonhare!! 👏🏽 Great job!!

Nice progression and nice smooth transitions, and a little percussion. I can only wish and practice at this point.

I have played sections of this over and over just to try to get them right 90% of the time. Tommy Emanuel always says break it down, learn just one bar and play it over as many times as it takes then it will become second nature. Let’s hope so. I intend to try it out at my first ever live open mic since joining TAC, tomorrow at the Scones VOM. Wish me luck… 🤞😬🎸
