  • When is it completed?

Posted by Freedom2ignite on September 19, 2021 at 8:43 pm

Just finished my second week of daily challenges. I’ve played 16 days in a row, multiple times a day. I honestly cannot remember the last time before TAC I prioritized this kind of time and my playing shows!

I’m unsure of when to make a challenge as complete. I’m definitely not fluid on them on day one, even a few days later. But I have tired it.

    So, what’s completed to you?

Mark them complete after the minimum 10 minutes per day. If you want to revisit them, either mark them as a favorite or revisit them anytime during the month they’re posted. Welcome to TAC @Freedom2ignite !

Hi Sean ( @Freedom2ignite ), I mark things complete after 1) I’ve put enough time into it and 2) I’ve given my best effort to complete a challenge.

Sometimes the amount of time is way more than 10 minutes, sometimes just 10 minutes. Sometimes my best effort isn’t near good enough, but it was my best shot at that time. The nice thing is, the Daily Challenges come around again (between 8 to 12 months +/-) and that’s one good way to measure your progress. Good luck on your journey Sean, and keep the fire burning!(lol)

I mark complete after 10 minutes of concentrated practise – and often practise on for 5 to 10 more minutes AFTER!!! marking complete.

I very seldom revisit previous daily challanges. I did that 2 years ago and it made me feel bad, “unable” and “always behind”.

And without revisiting I´ve enough time to work on my quarterly goals.

    Hi @Freedom2ignite ,

I like all the comments you have gotten. I’d like to add one thing. The definition of “complete”.

First, what it does not mean. It DOES NOT mean you have mastered the lesson. It DOES NOT mean you can do the lesson fluidly. It DOES NOT mean you can do it sorta ok. It DOES NOT have anything to do with how well you can do the lesson or even what you learned from the lesson.

What it DOES mean is you spent some time on it. THAT’S IT!!!

If you spend some time each day on the lessons on TAC you will get better at playing guitar… eventually… slowly… incrementally. That’s been proven by thousands of TAC members.

And the cool part of all this is there is only one rule: HAVE FUN!. That’s not a cliché. If you are driving yourself too hard you won’t have fun and you won’t progress at the best possible pace. If you are having fun you will progress at the best possible pace… for you.

I hope this helps. Please don’t hesitate to ask any other questions you may have. As Tony said today in the Acoustic Tuesday Show: “The only stupid question is the one you don’t ask.”

Thanks everyone! My life is never complete, haha, so I struggle with marking something complete that I know is not done. Small wins is why I joined. But I also over thought the whole process.

The daily habit of playing guitar has always been a want to do thing but not something I did. TAC has changed that. I also see the advantages of seeing the same lessons come around.

Thanks for the great reply’s and your time to help me.

    One more thing to add:

It DOES NOT mean you have to try the whole daily challange. You can do the whole challange or any part of it you feel like doing. Maybe one half of the challange, maybe the combination of a few notes, maybe a chord, maybe the rhythm… or something totally different you got inspired to play by the daily challange.

That’s a really good point @Kristin1 . I’m glad you made that clear. That may be something I am still guilty of. I like to put rules on myself, so the TAC philosophy has helped me a lot.

    Freedom-

    My 2 cents to add-

There are some really good answers to your question in this thread- from some very caring and knowledgable people!

As for me, I- (used to- and that’s important— used to)- attack the “Dailies” like a flock of seagulls after a bag of Cheetos. Sometimes I’d work those babies for 6 or 7, 10-minute sessions- until I had them “down”. Or- worse- (way worse)- until I –DIDN’T– have them “down” —- and felt bad about it.

Experience and good listening- (here in this Forum)- has taught me nowadays to put in an —-honest—- effort and be fine with that. Not sayin’ give up easy– (remember……. it is a LESSON). Maybe go a couple extra days- (say, if it’s a mind- or finger- coordination issue that you want to strengthen a bit). Maybe make a note of it or Favoritize it, and come back to it now & again- (just for the fun of seeing your own improvement- and you WILL see it!- “build yourself in” some small wins!)- but just for 3-4 minutes and move on.

If you don’t already know- some of the Dailies will come much easier to you than others. Full disclosure- for me, I sometimes kind-of “coast” on those easier ones. Example- when the movement of the hands seems easy- I try to REALLY focus just on clear notes.

    OK- my “dumb-guy” summary:

Keep it light, and keep it fun! But…. at the same time…. remember, we all bought into this Acoustic Challenge to learn how to improve our guitar playing…. (read that line again)….. And it is indeed a Challenge! (Here’s a weird comparison– NO golfer ever wants to play a boring, flat, straight, golf course— blah!). So give each Daily a good, honest, effort, go back if you want to, be honest with yourself about that lesson, and don’t let “expectations” take away the joy and FUN of hearing those sounds you just created!

(thanks Mike and Loraine for the nudge(s) that keep many of us going- me for sure)

@Freedom2ignite , I am done with the lesson after 10 focused minutes of playing That is when I smash the “Mark Complete” button. Do I go back to the lessons? I do. I use them as a way to advance my playing especially the Monday warmups. Those I will do everyday of the week they are presented. By the end of the week I have them memorized. All of the lessons work in conjunction with different aspects of training but I really benefit from working out any tension I hold in mind/hands doing those Monday exercises.

      Jeff-

In my long-winded reply, I forgot to say that I do just about that exact same thing as far as the Monday warmup lessons go- (I must be on the right track!😀). I use the Monday lesson as my warmup- (along w/ some other older warm-up stuff)- to start out each day’s practice that week.

BTW- I forgot to add YOU to the “list” of those who have kept me going- and on the right path- (along w/ many others🤨).

It just seems to work right? And I forgot to say how much I like this little nugget-

@mkjohnsons said : “Keep it light, and keep it fun!” I am gonna put that one up there with “Expectation is where fun goes to die”

We all help each other. It’s part of TAC magic.
