Like your style, have been taking lessons with a local guy for the last year but you seem to explain it better, thanks. I am into book 2 of Hal Leonard lessons, just wondering which direction to go?
this was really tough for me – to keep up with the changes, pick on the right strings and read the tabs at the same time. Was much easier when I finally memorized the changes. Doesn’t help that I still need to look at the frets.
I messed up a couple of times, but I recovered. finished right with Tony! Ended the practice on a high note!
Trying to stay in time with another player is more challenging than I ever imagined it would be. I’m glad my first time trying to do it was to a video backing track so that I could attempt it as many times as I needed to.
Thank God for little wins. Took longer than I think it should have, apparently I’m not that coordinated.
I’m with you Clint. For whatever reason, my picking hand was STRUGGLING to hit the right strings. But you’re right, it’s the little wins.
Well it took me a couple weeks, but I mastered it!
It’s so rewarding to be able to play along with a backing track…even if I’m still occasionally mixing the strings when watching the frets or misplacing my fretting fingers when watching the strings. Progress, progress, then perfect, right?
Starting to get better at using the pick and sounding better and better as I practice. Been having a lot of fun and been amazed at how much I have already picked up and learned already!
I can play the riff …but not yet able to keep up without losing my place on the backing track. Will keep working on it.
Nice little section! Love playing power chord blues.
Liking this. A lot. Love the bite-sized pieces I can get my mind (and fingers) around.
When l practice I seem to be fine, but when I try to play with the backing track I kind of get lost along the way.
Yes so do I, I feel rushed and under pressure and the concentration goes. I practised a lot with the metronome [slower than the backing track] and find it also helps to do the muted strings count-in strums like Tony does on the video just to get a rhythm going instead of trying to get straight into it.
I really enjoyed this lesson great for building confidence, I can play the riff and keep time but when I try to play along with the backing track I get distracted, great to practice and I’m sure I’ll get there eventually.
I liked playing along with the backing track. I am looking foreword to one day being able to improvise.
Laura,
Great work!!! I am glad you played with the backing track!!! If you keep this up you will be improvising for sure!!!
Cheers,
Tony
So far this has been a big help in getting me back on track after not playing for a couple months. You’re killin’ it with this site Tony, great stuff for a new player.
Steve,
So glad you are digging the site and finding it helpful!!! Keep up the awesome work!!!
Cheers,
Tony

Solar flares must be acting up. Had to watch myself on this one, I kept slipping into playing “Honky Tonk”
Glenn,
LOL it’s ok sometimes you have to follow the muse 🙂
Cheers,
Tony
So fun! Maybe you’ll add a little lesson with a turnaround for just that little extra bit of spice?
Mark,
I like that suggestion… a lot 🙂 The turnaround is a great idea and an essential element to learn. My wheels are turning!!!
Cheers,
Tony
