  1. Really fun relaxed style…thanks TAC great week. Going to review a few on Sunday morning now all my chores are done. Have a nice weekend.

  2. I was in the middle of writing some text when the screen jumped back to day 2 of the bass walks and my text disappeared.
Today I decided to focus on trying to play the chords properly and in time and skip the bass walks and chucka picking. Just playing the chords is as much as I can manage. I might as well accept where I am and work there. I find the F chord particularly challenging to finger so I sometimes switch to the barre chord F which is much easier to play and sounds fuller. Even so, I was often a beat or 2 behind by the time I got my fingers organized to play some of the chords. I have muscle memory for the barre chord F but not for the other chords. I still have to look closely at my fingering to see where they are. And I need to have the chord fingering diagrams close at hand to remind what they look like.

  3. Sat with this one for quite a while. The transitions were certainly “outlier” transitions–no rhyme or reason or pattern that I could detect, whatsoever. But I did have small success with it. Baby steps, yes?

  4. Walk this way challenge coming along a lot smoother today.
Thanks James H for the mention of Tennessee Flat Top Box! That was fun, especially since the YouTube clip showed close ups of the picking! We’ve got a winter wonderland scene here in Colorado Springs, perfect for indulging in a longer play session today!

  5. Did the write out on blank sheet again, but had it with the open TAB sheet in view as well. Work great to keep me in the progression. Got this one up to 1X speed so far….. Small WIN !!!! ……. Lin.

  6. CBS morning show performance by Billy Strings on guitar and ChriscThely on mandolin. Must See: performing Wild Bill Jones !!! ☆☆☆☆☆

  7. I achieved the chords and the walks but still struggling to get that up down pick action on the correct strings. Trying also to figure out where and when will I ever be able to use this??? Time will tell!

  8. This is my favorite on of all! I took several days to learn this one last year playing it for several hours a day….over & over again. Never gets old! Love to use this one to try out different guitars at the music stores! ;O) Keep Strumming! Gonna play it a few more hours tomorrow! Got it going pretty fast this time round! Yeehaw

  9. Another nice week! Another one that sounds good at all speeds. Worked it about an hour, it builds off the past exercises, and like the others is fun to play.
I LOVE FRIDAY EVENINGS – Longer play sessions.
Jamming other stuff on my electric, then coming back to run that “Sambora Sweetness” practice yet again using hybrid picking. I almost have that thing down following a full month of work. Easy for many folks, however a life-long roadblock for me.

  10. That was completely hopeless. I was struggling so much with trying to get the chucka picking right that I always missed the beginning of the walk, which I could not remember anyhow. Even if my fretting finger was in the right place I couldn’t pick on the right string. It was like trying to recite 2 unfamiliar alphabets alternating between each one. The only win was that I showed up.

  11. This could be pretty nice, but I don’t know any songs where it would fit comfortably. Not many that have you playing the same chord for all that long, and to have two measures to play with in between chords seems unlikely. In any case, I did it, although I had to rely on the tab for the walking.
An interesting week for sure. I liked the other walks much more. I’m sure I’ll use them.
Thanks, Tony. Have a good weekend, everyone!

    1. Nice Call on that @GaryRC I thought it was just me but I felt the same.
Tennessee Flat Top Box by Johnny Cash is a good example on how to use this technique in your playing, pretty busy runs in that one.
Have a great weekend to all at TAC 🙂

  12. Another fun week! I really enjoy revisiting these older challenges because it’s a good marker for my progress. Each day this week I was able to do the challenges in higher speeds with good accuracy except yesterday my wrist broke down on me because I didn’t warm up and stretch properly. I also notice that I had a couple of challenges that I apparently didn’t click complete on for the month, so I had to make sure I did that too.

  13. interesting week. Small win – I am beginning to get the boom-chicka rhythm. The walk downs certainly add interest, but I need to go glacially slow to get them. As my experience grows I am sure this aspect will improve. It would be nice to see them in context of a song. I’m currently practicing a blues tune which has a chordal walk-up turnaround in the intro, so this week has helped.

  14. There are a couple songs I have that in which it sits on the same chord for a few measures. Hard to “hear” how this 2 measure transition will sound, but I definitely want to give it a try! Have a great weekend!

  15. Enjoyed all the “walking” we did this week. Today’s 2 measure walk feels weirdly un-musical to me tho. I’ll try speeding up the tempo…

  16. Continued to practice this challenge as transitions became easier. was particularly pleased with transition to F Chords (where I used to default to an F Maj. 7 in lieu of the F maj. Chord) and the notes where ringing out. Increased speed to 1.25 and will revisit to continue practicing this challenge.

  17. today’s lesson was easy, but I am still working on yesterday’s…. and it is so much better already. Starting to “get” the finger placement on the C and D chords so I’m getting a cleaner sound than I was … and understanding the “squeeze and release” for the sliding barre chords better. This will be a daily exercise for me … ain’t putting this one away just yet.

  18. I love the exercise of the two measure long, bass walk because it teaches scales/ chromatic scale without realizing learning scales in a fun way, something others have always told me I should do….lol

    Thanks once again

  19. For me, the best thing about this week has been the boom-chicka rhythm. It requires me to be precise about picking with strumming – not something I’ve been great at.

  20. Like Groundhog day, this challenge will be fun when it comes around again. Or, if you want to review it more often, you can go to the Skills Courses and find it there. Good stuff. But, I am not happy about the six more weeks of winter, although not so bad when you consider it is only half a dozen weeks. Cheers.

  21. I’ve really enjoyed this entire month. Tony – this was great. Thanks also to fellow TACers who have helped with some aspects through your comments and direct messages. I appreciate the interaction.

  22. I like this lesson alot it gives me time to transition to the next chord with the two measures of quarter note walk ups and walk-downs, Fun week!

  23. Had it down except a little hiccup doing the boom chicka right after the transition into the G. Took a bit but I got that down then started practicing it all without looking while watching tv. Sounds pretty nice!

  24. A good week of lessons, we were able to work on pick accuracy, boom-chickas, barre chords, and bass walks to break up the standard chords. Looking forward to what’s on tap for the new month ahead!

  25. I really enjoyed learning walk downs and kind of understood how to pick the notes for the transition, until today. It is hard to see the logic of where all these notes come from, so I’m having problems remembering each transition sequence. I just don’t get the patterns. I’ll keep trying it, but doubt that this will become a favorite transition. But it has still been a fun week overall.

  26. Good laugh with you today Tony. February’s gonna be great, can’t wait to see what’s ahead. I’m sure it’ll be fun!!

  27. The walks seem long. I will try it out in a few songs to see how it goes.
Great week , looking forward to February’s lessons.

  28. Funny enough once again my guitar memory quicked in… and voilà I have it! Sat last night playing my guitar, practicing singing to Angel of Montgomery and Ain’t no sunshine…. so happy that I have those two songs. Happy Weekend to all my guitar geek friends… enjoy! and Keep playing!!

    1. No. That is the count for one month of lessons.
Now on to the next month. February will likely have 20 lessons. Five lessons per week. Strap in. Enjoy the ride.

  29. This lesson concludes a great week of guitar practice. I hope everyone is doing well, and I can’t wait to read the comments and see how everyones week progressed.
