  • @Loraine , I agree singing and strumming are harder than it should be. You did really well. Chord changes were clear and no buzzing. Playing in front of people no less. EXCELLENT, My brother wanted me to play a song that I have been practicing for months now…. As soon as I started my mind went blank. Ha ha ha, Again, sounded great. Rock on.

Ok, I am going to add one more thing to @Moonhare post. Now that you have an idea of the different sizes of the guitar, you have to keep in mind the width of the neck. Up near the nut (top of the neck when it connects to the head stock) is the thinnest area, make sure you can get your hand around it to make chords. I’m including a small chart (I’m a visual kind of gal, charts make sense to me faster). The jpg is just a small example, google “guitar neck sizes” and you see a million of them. I was going to buy a Resonator Guitar on-line and just happen to go to the guitar store to try it out and guess what? Yep, I couldn’t make a chord without dislocating my finger joints. the fretting area was huge. Then there are the slide guitars that have a squared off neck, but those are meant to be played on your lap with a slide, drum stick or whatever else you want to bounce off the strings. Are you totally confused yet?

Hi @Moonhare, maybe this will help. I’ve included a couple of pictures with some (not all) sizes shapes of the guitar. The Dreadnought is a large guitar with a lot of sound. The Parlor is a smaller (maybe 3/4 size). I have a Martin D-28 (D for Dreadnought), it’s large, it might even be a little too big. I was a newbee when I purchased it. I have a 1/2 size Classical (it’s easy on the fingers because 3 of the strings are nylon). One that really fits my size is the Taylor mini (3/4 size). Last but not least….. a 1/4 size entry guitar that I can use in front of the computer. Oh, and a 3/4 size guitar doesn’t mean it’s 3/4 the size of a full size guitar. It’s just a couple inches smaller. The same goes with the 1/2 size and 1/4 size. I’m sure someone else will answer that might be able to answer your question better, but….. I wanted to give it a try 😉

  • I am going to agree with Mike-Garunier , look into taking the fretboard wizard. I went though it a couple of times to really understand it. Also the challenges are good to keep up on , especially Wednesday. There is a Blues 5 day challenge in the courses that might help you out a little too. good luck, but don’t worry you’ll get there.

@Loraine , I have as my 90 day goal is to be able to fingerpick “dream a little dream of me”. As of right now, I plan on posting my accomplishment. I will have to use my IPhone to record, is that going to be good enough?

@Loraine , I was floored at how much time I wasn’t putting in till I started tracking. I tried tracking what time I practiced and that just didn’t work for me. I just plan on the first time I go in the basement (where I play), I sit for at least 10 minutes to play something. My chart is the same as a journal. At least your tracking something. I’ve always been a computer gal, so the excel sheets are my friend. Easy for me, not so easy for someone else. Thanks for the comment.

I saw the 1.5mm s at Guitar Center and thought it would be too thick. Next time I’m there I’m going to pick up a bag. Thanks

I just started to use a pick a few months back. I never liked them. Now? I realize they have their place. Thanks for the comment.

@Bill_Brown, your right about the depth of the dreadnought. When I’m playing my Martin D28 it is like having my arms around a big dog. I never released how big they were.
In fact….. I think I just named my Martin. From now on, It will be know as the “Big Dog” 🙂

Ok then @Loraine, then the IPhone is going to be it. Your videos come out really nice. Sound and video. I’ll start practicing with recording myself. Thanks

I’m going up to the guitar store near me and picking up a collection of different sizes of picks. From what I’ve been reading on the posts some are better for strumming some better for picking. As for the slide, I thought I saw a course on this site for learning slide. I thought…. what the heck, why not. Ragtime! I would love to learn ragtime stuff. Good job
