Ok, @dfmarcus63 , direct answer to your direct questions:

    1) is there a beginning to the Daily Challenge – NO

The dailies don’t work that way. They give us direction for practice that day. Throughout the week, they cover the range of guitar skills. If we do these lessons everyday, even just 10 minutes a day, we will see steady progress. Yes, it’s slow. It’s guitar. We’re the lucky ones because we are improving slowly but steadily as opposed to not getting anywhere for years.

    2) Your screen said “The Gauntlet” that day just as everyone’s screen said “The Gauntlet” that day. That was the daily lesson that day.

    3) Of course it was day one for you. It was the first day you did a daily lesson. The daily lesson that was on tap that first day was “The Gauntlet”.

Welcome to TAC. The best online guitar instruction site on the World Wide Web, in my opinion. Have fun is the number one goal. How cool is that. And everyone who does these daily lessons sees improvement regardless of what the do or don’t understand or how they go about it or where they started from. There are few guitarists who have enough, broad-based skill to get zero benefit from TAC. Pretty sure if you were there you wouldn’t be here. 😁

    I hope this helps.

I guess I’m late to the party @bmmcdonald , but I see there are somethings that I would have said that haven’t been said, so… I’ll say them.

First, the direct answer to your direct question: NO, you DO NOT need electronics in your guitar to play in an open mic. Simple answer.

Ok, so open mics, you didn’t say wherther you are talking about a “real” open mic or a Virtual Open Mic. We would love to have you join us on the Virtual Open Mics. Let us know and we can provide you with links to join.

Now, @Carol-3M-Stillhand already gave you some info on this, but I will add to it. Usually, the “real” open mics have a cable lead to plug into your guitar. I don’t know if all Open Mics have an instrument pickup as they are local affairs run by a local person and there is no uniform code that they have to adhere to regarding equipment or technical expertise. Some are better equipped than others. There is a good chance the open mic in your area could handle acoustic guitars, but you’ll have to find out.

If you do indeed want to play at a real open mic and the one in your area doesn’t have an instrument mic for acoustic guitars, then you would need some kind of pickup. That information has been covered very well, so I’ll leave it there.

On the Virtual Open Mics, Carol mentioned that a laptop would work for you. That is correct, assuming you have a laptop. A smart phone also works, technically, but they are even more limited than a laptop. If you have a desktop, that’s the best, but then you need some equipment.

I will leave it there for now since I don’t know what you have or what you want. If you want to be a part of the VOMs (Virtual Open Mic) and you also have a desktop and you are willing to invest some money, then let us know and we can give you further information.

    I hope this helps.

    Welcome Melvin ( @otaykia@msn.com ),

I was wondering if you have taken the skills course titled “5 Day Guitar Routine Challenge”. That course will give you the direction so you know you are doing what you need to do. If you are having fun and playing guitar every day then you are being successful. And that leads to progress which leads to more fun and more success.

  • See, now you need to be careful of doing things like this @Cadgirl because this could make you a “real” guitarist. 🤣

Wow, Denise, this is really awesome. This is the kind of exploration that will grow both your guitar skills and your musical creativity. I’m going to use a copy for myself to play with, but the real benefit of this was your actually working it out.

I still haven’t done much with incorporating the daily lessons into my playing. But this is an excellent way of getting these pieces into small chunks that you can very easily put them into songs you play. I am very impressed to say the least. And I’m definitely not only going to try using what you’ve come up with, I’m going to try coming up with some stuff like this on my own.

What a wonderful example you have set. Thank you so much.

  • “The improvements far outweigh what is gone”. I love it. That’s the spirit. This community won’t die because new people are constantly signing up for Tony’s Acoustic Challenge. Now, the community could be in a constant state of flux if everyone leaves the community after a while, whether 6 months or 2 years or whatever. But it only takes a few people who have been here a while to be the “cheerleaders” of the community for the new comers.

Now, getting back to the 5 Day course, I actually took the Monday lesson. Then I never went back. The whole idea of the course is to build a routine that is consistent. I have been with TAC for over 2 1/2 years and I still haven’t developed a regular routine.

And that brings us back to how we help and inspire each other. This is my weakness and I need to work on it.

  • Yes, the 5 Day Routine Challenge is new @Cherie and @Cadgirl . It’s part of the new platform. I feel bad for the people who reacted too quickly to the platform change and bailed because this new platform truly is better as a guitar teaching site. Even us “old timers” need to go through the course Cherie. I have been telling new comers about it and that’s good. But I only started the course myself and never went back after the introduction video. So you’re the big hero on this one Denise. Maybe you can share a post in the “Routine” section of the forum.

Yes, @Cadgirl Tony is updating them. This platform change was much bigger than anyone anticipated. Also, every month we have had one whole week of new lessons. Tony and crew are putting a lot of time in. They will get to everything… eventually, including Fretboard Wizard.

I’m sorry for your wait, @bubbapaul , but FW will come open sooner or later. In the meantime, there is so much to work on. Learning guitar is a lifelong journey and it’s slow, very slow. Eventually you will look back and realize this inconvenience really didn’t impact your guitar journey much at all. There are many different paths and many different combinations of all the varied pieces that make up the journey.

Play everyday and have fun. If you do that, you are already there.

This is awesome and kinda funny, Mark. We have a thread within a thread going on here. Thanks for responding one more time. After all the thinking and reading I’ve done in this inside thread, your latest comment seems to cement some of my ideas. And I totally agree that “this is the essence of TAC”. I also agree that these discussions are vital to learning the TAC method. Learning how to learn. How blessed are we?

    Mark,

Reading your thoughts and presenting my own thoughts seems to help me refine my understanding. This last comment of yours helps me to see something that has only been seen in vague outline until now.

You said “yes- both methods work, absolutely”. And that’s when I saw clearly how I can improve my own learning method.

I think the two ideas we are discussing are two parts of the same method.

When I am trying to learn something that involves technique on the guitar, I need to go slow, very slow. I need to continue going slow until it speeds itself up automatically and I can play fast and clean.

However, I shouldn’t work on one thing for more that 15 or 20 minutes tops or I will burn out. It will be more of an exercise in frustration than a slow but steady technique improvement session.

Now this goes for learning a new song or anything that is taking effort. So obviously it covers everything except when I am just having fun on the guitar and flowing along with my sound effortlessly. And another obvious thing is that if I am practicing for an hour or two, that involved many different things I was working on.

This clear picture of how to practice by going slow and limiting the time spent on any one thing is going to change my guitar practice a lot. I may well have a small win to share in the near future.

That could, indeed, be the problem, @Loraine . I was not able to understand before, but that makes sense. I’d try changing strings, @Ping .
