For the transitions between strumming and picking as the tempo is pretty slow, it’s not so bad. For getting a balance in volume using thicker pick than I usually do, e.g. 1mm rather than 0.73mm helps, as does strumming the chords quite lightly.

Hi Andy, first of all, no problems at all in using sheet music to refer to at the VOMs, a lot of people do this. As for mics, you definitely want to use an external mic, just as with recording the difference will be massive compared to using the one built into your laptop.

Thank you Alfred and Marquita. I’ve got to a point where I’m running out of material for the VOMs and so thought I’d push myself out of my comfort zone and try singing as well. I need to get into the habit of deciding on a few songs in advance and then practicing them though, I only picked this tune to play about 10 minutes before stepping up to the mic.

I’m a long way from where I want to be, but certainly enjoy playing and it’s so pleasing that other people appreciate it as well.

Thanks @Niels and @Dirk_R . While it’s simple, it’s still a fun song to play and acts as very good practice for consistent rhythm and smooth chord changes. An alternative is to play only with down strums, which gives it a strong, driving rhythm. That’s pretty tiring for your strumming arm though!

Dirk, once in a blue moon I do take my guitar to my local park, although I think the average guy on the street doesn’t appreciate it the same way as other guitarists. 😉
