Almost everyone can find a position on the fingerboard via Tony’s directions. Telling people what note that is would only really help those that already know where to find it. Learning where the notes are just isn’t as effective as a teaching tool IMHO. Tony’s all about keeping it simple and fun, not to frustrate newbies. Learning the notes is important but irrelevant to the lessons.

Monthly Guitar Parties will continue while Quarterly Membership Check In sessions will happen and I imagine supplement the MGPs when we have a member event. Again, wild speculation but fun to consider as an exercise.

MemberApril 10, 2021 at 1:06 pm in reply to: Calling All Phoenix area residents (or AZ residents) – Local Jam ClubHi @David_M_Dm! It’s a few days later and I’m wondering how your meeting went. I’m the San Diego organizer (for lack of a better term) and wanted to set something up. With the changeover from the old site (where we had at least 30 members) I can now search and only find 7 in the area including myself which is pretty frustrating. I realize we’re being told that Jam Clubs weren’t an official part of TAC (sure seemed like it though) but now I feel cut off from the other people in my area. I feel especially bad about the fact that some were very recent TAC members, contacted me to join the Jam Club and we never even had a chance to meet in person due to the lockdowns. So, returning to the original question, was your Jam meeting a success after posting this message here?

While I agree with the suggestions above I also have to add that you shouldn’t sell yourselves short folks. Even a two or three chord song is easy enough to get under your belt. Believe me, even playing one of those more “basic” songs is enough to boost your confidence and motivation. Not to mention it’s super fun to recreate something you’ve heard before. Just go for it and have fun!

Glad you had fun @Terry M. The open mics are still making my weeks whether I play something or just sit back enjoying the talent on display.

Some of the first chords I learned before my long time away from guitar were barre chords. A friend back then gave me the keys to the kingdom by explaining movable chords and then showing me the shapes for Major, Minor, 7ths, Major and Minor 7th, diminished and even half diminished chords. Of course by the time I came back to playing again after 25+ years I’d all but forgotten them and so went open chord mostly. I’ve been doing some extra study off the TAC site since lockdown though and starting to get them back under my fingers. They’re easy (once you know and can make the shapes) and super handy…especially when playing with other people…and yes, FUN! It amazes me how many TAC people seem to fear them or generally have a hard time with them or simply dislike these most useful shapes.

It’s only been a few hours folks. This is at least the 2nd thread on this but Victoria did respond on the other that it would be available later today.

Actually I thought the Zoom method was great. Best we’ve had so far, by far. Sure, if you are unfamiliar with Zoom then there’s definitely a bit of a learning curve. I’d offer to help but Zoom is very platform/device dependent. I would recommend you go check out some of their help and get familiar with what has become the premier video communication tool over the past 12 months. Actually TAC is a little late to the Zoom world as far as I’m concerned though happy we’re here. Better luck will be yours if you spend some time just getting familiar with it instead of trying to fight the tide @DocBob. Based upon the folks I’ve seen who are now using Zoom I’d say anyone can learn it fairly quickly. Maybe try and attend one of the VOMs as practice with Zoom (even if you don’t play they’re quite entertaining}. Good luck!

Another great job with a classic tune…thanks again Michelle. I appreciate your tenacity (as a fellow stubborn person).

Not completely “shut down” but significantly reduced. The new format doesn’t lend itself to the same kind of discussions we once had in these forums. Seems like that was on purpose though so people will focus on the dailies (which I rarely ever do).

Don’t worry @Marquita, the Tuesday shows are never live. I completely agree about the episode though. Like the “30 Days to Play” course it’s good to refresh the memory with some of the basics every now and then.

“When I joined TAC, it was to get control of my hands and guitar strings, and yes the computer is the vehicle, and I gained a lot of help from others, but I am gaining control of my hands and guitar strings under the new Website, and hope, but cannot predict, its foibles will resolve.”
Funny but when I joined TAC that was definitely part of the reason. The other reasons were to get more familiar with the fretboard and because of the whole “guitar geeks unite” idea of a community and jam clubs. Well, I’ve learned a ton of theory and now, a few years later, I certainly have a better grasp of neck geography. Unfortunately it now seems that the community aspect is not being nurtured (quite the opposite) with a lack of the cohesiveness that I’d seen the past few years. I’m not leaving TAC but have found I definitely log in and post a whole lot less, am having difficulty navigating (and let’s not even talk about my retinas being melted by the new scheme) and falling away from TAC in a way I could never have imagined even a month ago. I’ll still attend open mics (again, not really supported by TAC) and practice my 10 minutes a day but these are now basically the only things I’m taking from TAC and that’s just sad when it used to be a whole lot more. I’ve been holding back on commenting as any new rollout is sure to have issues but from what I can see and what we’ve been told I don’t expect a whole lot. Time will tell.
