one year???? I couldn’t handle it. Especially if I played it regularly. They would be too gunky to me. But that’s just me. Like Jumpin’ Jeff said, some like them old and thumpy. But I’ll disagree with him on them not going out of tune. I’m sure if the metal used is not very consistent or of poor quality, they could lose their elasticity and suffer some kind of metal fatigue.

The question you need to ask is, is this one string staying in tune after you retune it? It’s possible that the winds on the tuning peg slipped or it was kinked in the nut or ball end and popped free.

But as for me and my strings, I change them around 3 months if coated, 1-2 months if uncoated when I’m playing regularly.

This is all subject to personal preference.

Congrats. In acoustic string world mediums are 13’s and lights are 12’s. But yeah, lighter makes a difference for sure.

other things that help with bar chords, a good setup with proper action. Also using a capo at the first fret will help lower your strings making playing those buggers easier. After you build strength and better technique, the chords without the capo will be a breeze.

if you prefer the tone of medium strings, try tuning 1/2 step down to E flat. That will lower the tension making fretting easier. Then put a capo at the first fret when you want to play in standard tuning.

GReat job Phil! This tune is a favorite of mine especially when the tempo is wound up. Keep up the great picking!

Learning a new skill is not always fun… Remember the point of the daily lesson is for you to give it your best 10 minutes of attempts. After that, if it was fun and you want to keep working at it go for it. If there is something else from say the skills area or another tutorial online for something that interest you, tackle that. TAC is a place to teach you skills so you can have fun once those skills kick in.

@jack_b, there is no right or wrong way for crosspicking. The tonal difference is marginal but it is there. Tony Rice (RIP) had an odd cross picking style but seemed to favor the down down up method. Molly Tuttle favors the alternating method. I’m not that good at it and often mix the two or get them mixed up. Currently I’m cleaner with the down down up method. But the alternating method is faster. It’s like anything else, as you get better at it, it will become automatic and you won’t even think about it.

Here is a lesson by Molly tuttle. It’s a bit long but she also goes over a song Tony teaches in the song vault. Tony mixes the two styles but Molly used alternating only.. https://youtu.be/sHT4HibXPeA

Enjoyed the April 2 VOM. I really liked Sherpa Dave’s performance. Maybe he can post it separately so I can enjoy it again.

@Real-Vic-G will this thread remain or is there another way to get VOM updates?

My calendar is on the wall behind me… sorry, couldn’t resist.

But i suspect it was not included as those activities are not part of the new core program. Perhaps it will be added at a later date.

Yeah, seems like the 1st, 2nd and 3rd strings have to be slightly out of it to sound ok. There is something called sweetened tuning that James Taylor uses. Look for it on Youtube. I can’t get a my tuner app to measure that accurately.

@cadgirl the lower bout is about the same width as a dreadnought. The upper bout is narrower. I think the depth (front to back) is a bit thinner than a dreadnought as well but maybe 1/2 to 1 inch. Depending on how thin a pick you use, the Taylor will be significantly brighter in tone.

AttyTJ, looks like you have the beginnings of a song there.

About the mentions, I’m kind of lost with the new site so I don’t see where I’m mentioned.

I have to hold on to the hope that a compromise will be made and things will morph to a better site as time goes by. Just hope that it’s not too much time.

Awesome! The fretboard wizard is a great course for those with zero theory.

If I may ask, what guitar did you buy 6 months ago? I bought a Taylor 314ce in 2013 for my 50th b-day and love love love it.
