Best of wishes for your back @stevieblues . Take it slow and if you feel any pain, stop right there and stretch and rest the back. Glad you’re back in the saddle though.

Hi @maryd and welcome to the TAC community. Stop playing if you have pain and ice the wrist for a bit. I played through pain in the past and it led to tendinitis and tennis elbow. I wasn’t able to play guitar for several months while it healed.
Great advice given by others to stretch before and after playing. One way to reduce some tension of power chords is to drop the pinky and just use the other 2 strings..

What a great outlet and replacement for idle time spent on electronics. I’m so addicted to my iPad and phone, mainly to create noise because I rarely watch t.v. And it’s just me and the dog and cat right now – very quiet. I too try to replace screen time by playing guitar. I pick one up multiple times a day. Congrats on your new guitar! Must sound awesome.

Welcome to the TAC community @gregoryrm60gmail-com ! Some sage advice from @mcarlson_sb . I would start with the TAC quick start course in the Slills area, and then focus on the 30 days to play and then the next 6 chords after that. Let us know if you have any questions.

@Timbothirroul I’m curious as to what your actual crisis is. Are you comparing your backstory to other’s backstories and feeling that your story just doesn’t measure up? If that’s what you’re saying, my recommendation is to simply accept another’s backstory as their own, but don’t use it to compare yourself out of being worthy of being a TAC member. You belong and are exactly where you’re supposed to be at any given moment.

Great How You TAC introduction @garyrc4aol-com ! I started guitar later in life too, and albeit a slow progression, I’ve definitely progressed during my 2 1/2 years with TAC. You’re spot on regarding Tony and the TAC orogram, and it’s ability to build a committed practice routine that leads to progression in playing skills.

That’s awesome @Brian-76 ! Congratulations! When you receive it, let it simply rest and acclimate to the temperature and humidity in your home before unpackaging and playing it. It’s torture being patient, but it’s so that you don’t damage the guitar. Make sure you post pictures.

Congrats on 3 years! So glad you will see your family. That must be extremely difficult to go that long without them. Good luck with wherever you end up and what you create when there.

I have a love hate relationship with the pick, and it rotating in my hand, holding it correctly, having a death grip, holding too lightly and losing it. Definitely check out the Jumpstart to Flatpicking. As for the other fingers, some people leave them loose to simply hang downwards, and others tuck the fingers in like a fist. Strumming is supposed to be from the wrist. If you rest your fingers on the pick guard then you’re playing through you hand/finger, instead of through your wrist.

Welcome to the TAC community @carinhiottgmail-com ! I think you’ll enjoy your journey. If you haven’t already, I suggest you begin with the 30 days to play. Ask questions on the forum, and share your small wins with us.
Good luck, and have fun!

@Timbothirroul Thanks for the clarification. As for the barre chord up and leaving, my suggestion is to simply keep trying, and it will return. Analyze what you might be doing differently than when you were able to consistently play the barre chord. It could be as simple as adjusting the angle of the neck upwards and towards you. Is our hand positioning the same. I wouldn’t fret too much about it, because it will return.
Yes, many have different scenarios and responsibilities that differ from ours. Each is our own. Even though your life may differ in responsibilities and commitments, it is still important what you are working on or concerned with. Appears that you’ve realized that if others can do it, then so can you, and that what we think might be important is simply minor in retrospect of what others might be dealing with. I think that’s a big win in my book for your realizing this.
It’s all good. We’re all right where we’re meant to be at any given moment in time. 🙂
