Blackbird – Progress Video
Posted by KayMesser on August 1, 2023 at 9:55 pmAs a part of celebrating my 1 Year TACiversary I wanted to share a video on the song I’m learning. It is a slightly simplified version of Blackbird. I’m at about .75 speed and I have all of the structure memorized. I memorized the song in chunks so I still have some delays in linking them together. I haven’t tried singing to it yet, but I did sign up for voice lessons so that will be something to work on soon.
Here is me playing today.

https://youtu.be/uskwSdJyYuII’m using a song structure sheet by Sean Daniel that you can download here:

Awesome job @KayMesser. I learned this version, too… one thing I noticed, you had your third finger on the first fret at some point, and you repeated it every time…I think it corresponds to, “you are only waiting for this moment to be free” and each version of that. Try to correct that now, before it sets too far into your muscle memory because it will get in your way of playing it up to speed. You should be very proud of your accomplishment in tackling this iconic tune! Keep posting and having fun!!!👍🏼 ✌🏽😃

Hi Marisa, it is wonderful that you have learned this version as well. Thanks for the tip and for catching the finger placement. I appreciate it! I’m excited to start tying the song together more smoothly so your advice is very helpful.

Happy TACiversary !!!
Thanks for sharing with us Kay.
I liked the early version cause I could watch both hands. The “today” version is moving along along smoother and quicker. Your efforts and consistency are polishing that piece up real pretty!
Thanks
Hoodie Rick

Thank you so much Hoodie! I wish I had started to record myself earlier in my guitar playing. It is really nice having multiple versions at different times to look back on to see progress. Much appreciated!

Enjoyed that…. 😃
Well done… 👏
For some reason it reminded me of Youth by Daughter… (great track if you wanna try and sing along)

Hi, @KayMesser ! Thanks for sharing and Happy TACiversary as well. Great tune to work on. I always loved that song and it’s a great way to learn some finger picking. I see you’ve made lots progress since starting. Very nice! 🎶👍🌞

Thank you so much Charlie! I definitely gravitate towards finger picking. It is a lot of fun.

@KayMesser That is really good after only 1 year on TAC!! Great job. I have been struggling with Blackbird (lots of different approaches for this one floating around on YouTube) for some time now and just have to keep at it.-
What impresses me about your playing at this point is the clarity and smoothness of your chord transitions – really good for only being on board for 1 year.
Enjoy

I really appreciate your comment Chuck! I work a lot on clarity as I’m a little scared of learning mistakes early. I think Blackbird lends itself to sounding nice even when played slowly so it has been a good one to work on for me. Not easy, for sure but fun to see some progress.

Happy Taciversary! That’s a lot to memorize. It’s a great win! 👏

I memorized it in small chunks but it was a lot. Thank you so much!

Well done! Thanks for the inspiration. I may have to take a crack at this one of these days. Beautiful!

You should! The lesson video breaks it into chunks to make it more approachable. It is a fun one to learn

Thank you for sharing this.
I love this kind of song- quiet and simple-“sounding“- (but I think it’s probably pretty complex actually).
You play the way I hope to someday.

Thank you so much Mark. I really like that this song sounds nice when played slowly. I find some songs need to be played at speed to sound like the tune. This one is great for sounding simple and pretty.
It was humbling to record myself but it was helpful for me in seeing progress overtime. A win!
I’m excited to hear if you take a crack at this one!

Kay-
Thanks for responding!
I have found LOTS of “video-lessons” on this song- (not surprisingly, I guess), and the one I have been tinkering with most is the video by Marty Schwartz.
It think they are all pretty similar…….(?).
I’ll keep workin’ on it, and then- if I get the nerve- I’ll record and post it!

Kay-
Can you share what “version” is this, of that song?
I want to give it a try to learn it– (but I can see……. this is gonna take some time!).

of course:
This version is taught by Sean Daniel on YouTube:
Part 1
https://youtu.be/iJRYdKkJL8QPart 2
https://youtu.be/X-0O4yqMu0kand I found this video helpful around the fingerstyle that is unique to Blackbird (more flicking than picking). I don’t use his song structure but the video on the fingerpicking was helpful at improving my speed:

Great job! I watched both videos and seen the progress you made in 2 months! Nice picking! I’m a flat picker and wished I could FP like that! 🙂
-
I really appreciate it! I didn’t mentally think I had made any progress over the two months so it was really nice to have a video to reference. Even when we think we plateau if we play a little here and there progress will happen!
I can barely hold a pick so one of these days I want to be able to flat pick! So much opportunity.

Fantastic playing! You have inspired me to try and learn this song. It has always been a goal but it just seemed unattainable. I will try the method you shared. Thanks for posting and again – amazing playing !

Thanks so much for posting. Impressed with the clarity of your playing! Very inspirational.
