Feeling behind…
Posted by denise101smile on August 24, 2021 at 9:59 pmI’m spending lots of time on stuff like memorizing strings, getting fingers more flexible, etc, and not keeping up very well with 30 days plan… Wanting to know if it’s OK to take longer? I remember seeing a counter that ticks off lessons done, so that’s in the back of my mind, even though I’m trying not to let that stress me out… Anybody else been there?

Hi @denise101smile , Welcome to TAC👍 Everyone’s journey is different – it doesn’t matter if it takes you 300 days. What matters is that you pick up and play your guitar every day and have fun doing it. You don’t have to be at an expert level for any of the lessons, if you have an understanding, but have trouble executing, that’s fine, then go-ahead and move on to the next one. You can always come back to a lesson in the future if you want – don’t stress

Hi @denise101smile – I agree with the others. 30 days is only a suggestion. Take as long as you like. I do suggEst that you not aim for perfection. The 30 days to play is to introduce you to the guitar and some basics and building a good practice plan. Don’t be afraid to mark something completed and move on. You can always revisit previous lessons, and you may find that something that you had struggles with may come easier to you when You return to something. Have fun with it!

Thanks for the tip about coming back to things…been doing a lot of that now and it feels better.

Take as long as you need to. Continue at your own pace. Don’t compare yourself to others. You will grow and get better, and even surprise yourself. Enjoy the journey; don’t stress about it. Welcome to TAC!

If you are brand new, @denise101smile , the most important things are exactly what you are doing. You are doing the most basic and definitely necessary things so that you will be able to progress more easily and quickly. People, like myself, who try to push ahead faster actually take longer. I still sounded like a beginner 20 years later until I went “backwards” and started working on exactly the kinds of things you are doing. Now, I have been with TAC for just over 2 years and I have been making steady progress the whole time. I started with the basics and I still work on them. I always will. Every accomplished guitar player does.
You have gotten a lot of good advice here. You are doing great.

Late to the party here and probably just repeating everyone else’s great advice but I think it’s important we are all here for each other. Although I got through the 30 days OK in that time I certainly wasn’t getting it all perfectly. At last week’s 90 day TAC online party I committed to revisiting it this month, which I am doing after 6 months of TAC. I am so boosted about how much easier the challenges are now than when I joined. That’s the journey! Take it at your own pace BUT don’t feel you have to do all those perfectly before you move on. Go back to ones you want to in your daily sessions but feel free to dip in and out of the daily challenges too. I found those quite intimidating to start with but now I’ve settled into a routine of giving them a go I suppose I get about 2-3 per week that I can play at the 1x speed, perhaps 1 I can do faster and the others I attempt and don’t really get down. I NEVER say FAIL with those challenges I can’t do because it isn’t a failure to try to play something outside your comfort zone and not get it. That is the ONLY way you IMPROVE. Even Tony admits to having things he can’t play and so strives to get better at. Best of luck and sorry for the ramble. Darren

Thanks for all these suggestions…sounds like everybody just does whatever combination of things that they feel comfortable with, and it’s all OK!

Thanks Denise, for your post it’s just how I was feeling too. I’m a new TAC of about 3 weeks and wondering the same thing. Thanks to everyone for replying for all us newbies.

Fun to say Welcome to someone who’s newer than me! Really like this course and all the friendly support.

Hello @denise101smile,
how do you eat an elephant? One bite at the time. Don´t hurry. And expecially the 30 Days Challange has so much potential to help us improve.
I myself revisit the 30-Days-Challange every Quarter of the year at least once. Always with another focus. I started with “doing the Challange somehow” continued with “doing it better”, moved on to “finger accuracy”, “speed without loosing accuracy” and “playing without looking at the fretboard”.
But if you get overwhelmed with the 30 Days and have the need to do something different for a while, you could take a break and have a look at the daily challanges. Most days you will recognize a small part in those challanges, that are related to the 30 Days Challange. Maybe a Chord, maybe a very small part of a strumming pattern. Maybe two or three notes. Go for it, and return to the 30 Days refreshed a few days later again!

Hello, @denise101smile ! Looks like you’ve had much support and encouragement from others, which is great! If you have just started, sometimes some lessons can be a bit daunting. You need to go at your own pace and have fun. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Many of us have been there before and have a good answer that can make things easier for you. Have fun and go at your own pace. One important thing that you can do and should do if there are some lessons you would like to always have access to is to make them your favorites. There is a heart sign next to the video lessons. If you do not do this and the month ends, all the lessons from the month before will no longer be accessible for the current lesson month, but everything can be kept in your own favorites list. Have fun ! 🎶🎸
