Perspective from someone who has been around.. and around
I wanted to take some time to peruse the new site before making too many comments. Please know these are my own personal opinions and I am sharing them because I know I was personally guilty of making some assumptions about the direction of the forums but having had a few days to really get into it, I am finally ready to give some feedback.
First, those of us who have been here for a number of years have seen several site changes. Some have been great. Some not so great. But one thing has been constant – at least in my opinion – Tony, Levi and the TAC team truly have a passion for helping us become the kind of guitar players we want to be. Every iteration of a new application has been an attempt to increase our enjoyment and grow our skills.
Things I like about the new site –
The clean look is refreshing and honestly I like seeing the faces of folks I know. Especially since most of the pics I have seen so far are bringing back a memory.
Yay for the name change of “Get Unstuck” to “Community Support”. That is exactly what we do best – we support each other. We lean on and learn from each other. All the conversations about gear, guitars, straps etc are still conversations to be had.
I like being able to easily “reply” to a thread or to a specific comment within a thread.
I like being able to “favorite” a thread for easy recall.
I like having the greater control of playback speed instead of just slow/medium and fast.
I like the pop out picture feature.
I know there are some things missing like being able to differentiate between read and unread comments. Speed is a major problem. I was initially thinking beause couldn’t comment with a *like* it was problematic but now I reply with an icon. It really means the same thing and really doesn’t take any more or less time to do it. I do miss the ability to hover over a post and be able to see it without having to go into the thread. Messaging isn’t really great but But if you had been here from the beginning, these features weren’t available from then.
Finally, I am not trying to be a Pollyanna or cheerleader. I am just a former IT professional who has looked at this from the lens of developer and manager who knows that change is hard and it is easier to miss what you had when you still don’t know what you now have.
I am willing to give this some time to be finessed. If you haven’t
watched the video that Tony put out (located at the top of the page)
please give it a watch. It might help you feel more comfortable with
navigation and understand a little about the streamlining of the forums.-
