  • RIP David Crosby – Almost Cut My Hair

Posted by TMutter on January 19, 2023 at 5:28 pm

Music world is getting hammered recently with the passing of iconic artists.

This arrangement of Almost Cut My Hair is based on one of my favorite David Crosby performances. Just him and his guitar on stage. This is from a zoom performance last month and I dedicated it to a friend who is really leaning into his “inner hippy” in retirement.

I have kind of made it my theme song for 2023. Its not about the hair…. 😉

To me its about being free of fear, insecurity, and doing the things you love with no concern about judgement from others. Thanks Mr Crosby for giving the world so much music.

Yes, sad. Another rocker gone. Excellent tribute to David Crosby. Saw him in concert twice. With Byrds in 1971 and later years with CSNY. Always liked his sense of humor. Your rendition is way more polished than my version posted in this forum recently.

Regarding musical blasts in our past, I’m heading out this coming week to sail On The Blue Cruise with many classic 60-70s bands represented including headliner Justin Hayward, Pat Travers, Randy Hansen (Hendrix), Ambrosia, Lovin’ Spoonful (minus John Sebastian), The Babys, Renaissance, Firefall, Dave Mason,The Zombies (my wife saw them in 1964), Al Stewart, Starship(Mickey Thomas), Mike Dawes (amazing guitarist tours with Hayward), Little River Band, and, many tribute bands (Carpenters, Sixies – variety show). It will be good to see them before embarking to Rock n’ Roll Heaven.

    Should witness awesome guitar playing.

@TMutter Thanks again for the Crosby tune tribute.

    Haven’t cut my hair! 😁

Nice tribute and well done. It is much easier to “come into His Presence with singing”. I have realized that there are more songs outside than inside a hymnal. So let’s sing them all. We have lived and are living in a time when there is unprecedented new music technology (like amplification of the little guitar) and it has sparked a lot of good creativity. We are blessed to be able to enjoy and participate in it.

    Wow, @TMutter ;

I am very impressed with your presentation of this song. I never heard it, but I could actually hear David Crosby in it. Great job.

I love your original songs. I really like your lyrics. But it’s also how you can play them. This performance of yours makes me think maybe I should learn more cover songs so I can learn more styles of playing and writing songs. I’m assuming you learned those up the neck chord shapes because you learned this song. But now you can use those in your own songs.

Anyway, great job. And yeah, all our guitar heroes are getting old enough to fizzle out. Oh, wait, that means we’re getting older too. Hmm, that sounds like a song. 😎

@N-lightMike thanks Mike. You are correct about learning those chord shapes. I dont even know what the names are (although with FBW i can probably figure it out.) I was a little familiar with the pattern from a TAC daily challenge that moved the A7 up the neck with some variation so watching his video performance I could tell what he was doing.

Regarding covers and song writing you are correct. I took an online class from Ryan Tedder who is a famous grammy award producer. There is a technique in writing where if you have a sense for the style of song you are writing you can then find existing songs that share the same style. Then alter the chord shapes, rhythms, melodies etc to spark something new. It is just another tool to spark creativity. I think it does help to learn covers to expose yourself to other strumming patterns or melodies that one might not otherwise master.

Yes, @TMutter you have done that so well, incorporate techniques and chords you found in cover songs that I was actually able to tell you did that. I was very sure of it. So, now, you have influenced me to make that a conscious effort by your example. Thanks so much.

Great cover TMutter. Strangely I’m having the “to cut or not to cut” debate right now. I know if I cut it the hair will be donated to a charity.

But back to your playing. I really liked the tempo, the jazzy sort of rhythm you used. And your vocals are spot on. I always like your originals and now your cover. I look forward to more.
