My first year went pretty well. At first, I struggled with the daily challenges. I could play maybe one day a week without messing up. But over time, I noticed I was completing more days. Now the daily challenges have turned into my favorite part. I have made the guitar part of my everyday routine. I don’t play everyday but I’ve found that I’m thinking more about music and how it’s made up. I’ve completed a couple skills courses and they’re awesome. I’ve learned more about the tone of my strings, amps, picks and other gear.

I do struggle with playing songs. I don’t think I know “how to play a song”, if that makes any sense. I start to play a verse or chorus of a song, but then stop and I never finish it. I struggle with singing and playing as well. So those are some things to work on in year two.

I’ve also started FBW a couple of times and I struggle with that comprehension as well. It gets frustrating because it just never seems like it sticks.

But all in all I love the site and I would pay the yearly dues just to be part of the community. That’s worth it in it’s itself.

Congratulations on your 1 year TACiversary @Himleyn . It sounds as if you’ve come far and are having lots of fun. I have difficulty singing and playing too, but there are some songs that are easier to sing than others. It’s just finding them. Good luck in year 2.

Great you have kept at it. Well done on year one. Learning the skills does mean you’ll start to be able to string things together and perhaps a 90 day goal of learning a whole song would be worth trying. The best of Luck @Himleyn

Congratulations @Himleyn . This is a wonderful site and it consistently helps people make progress. However, there’s more to it than “getting better”.

The real deal is to have fun. As long as you’re having fun, then you are “doing it right”. But again, I would encourage you to work on a song. How to play a song? It’s like Nike says: “just do it”. Pick a song that you know. Preferably a song you sing along with when you hear it on the radio. Then, go find the chords and lyrics and start working on it.

When you start a chorus or verse and then quit, my guess is that you are judging yourself. You think it isn’t good enough. You’re not playing it like the guys on the radio. You will need to get better to be able to play it. Whatever it is, you’re wrong. You don’t have to do it perfectly. You don’t have to do it like the guys on the radio. It doesn’t even have to sound like the same song. You don’t even have to like it. But the more you “just do it”, the closer you’ll get to any or all of those things. By the time you’re good enough to sound like the guys on the radio, you’ll realize you don’t want to sound like them. You want your own sound. It’s easier to do that now. The best advice to playing music after “have fun”, is “let yourself make mistakes”. Some of the best music started off as a mistake.

I hope I have helped. I look forward to hearing about more of your progress.

    MG 😀

@Himleyn Congratulations! You have had quite a journey. Makes me reflex on how grateful i am to belong to such a wonderful community. I like the suggestion of a 90 day goal.

@Himleyn, Happy TACiversary! Year 2 will be an important one – building on what you already know. Lots of fun!

I’ve always sung, though I’m new to playing music. So playing songs came naturally. You might try playing to a song to the original or a cover, keeping tempo, following along with the chord changes, and listening to the dynamics of the music. Just a thought…
