Hi @GregF , no need to unlearn anything….your way is a super useful way. As That_Guy pointed out it just depends on what you are doing and what sound you want coming out of your guitar. Perhaps learning the new way in exercises would give you more options in your bag of tricks. You could keep playing the way you are comfortable with when you are playing songs or just playing around but at some point you will encounter situations where being able to do both will be super useful. Keep hanging around and you will be playing G chords ten different ways and you won’t even think about it.😄

@highihid , wishing you fast healing. I had shoulder surgery a year ago for labral tear and tendon anchoring. I suggest going slowly. LIterally. 40, 50, 60 bpm. I was able to play pain free at those tempos and I gradually began increasing speed from there. Be observant of how your shoulder feels. If it starts hurting fi nd another way to do it. Subtle changes in posture and arm position made a big difference for me. In some ways I think I may be a better player for having gone through it because it forced me to slow down and pay attention to tension big time. Being forced to play without tension was satisfyingly benefi cial .

<div>@Andy_D , Tony talks about how to use rhymic variations in Time in the Strumming Jumpstart Course. </div>

Also our Daily Challenges are all exercises in keeping time. The important thing is to play at a speed that you are able to keep time. Sometimes I have to use the metronome on a slower speed than even the lowest speed setting available on the video. I frequently will use speeds as low as 30 bpm (one beat every two seconds) to learn something new. Tension is my guide for increasing speed. Besides my guitar and a pick, my metronome is my most valuable tool in making music. I use the Matrix MR-600. The volume control is loud enough and soft enough and there is a click variation that allows for counting most time signatures. As I get up to desired speed I turn down the volume so that I only hear the click when I am not synchronized.

@SherryH , Outstanding observation regarding tabs. Glad you are finding the way to free your mind, your fingers are following.

I go to the tab if my ears can’t figure it out. I take the tabs as my hints and then go back to trusting my ears.

Hi @Sheryl14 , so sorry for your situation regarding painful hands/fingers. Guitar playing can be uncomfortable at times but should not be painful. You may benefit from an in person professional to help you manage the causes of your pain. I wish I could see how you are playing but hard to do in the virtual world. If you wanted to make a video of how you play in a typical session I would happily look at it and see what I could see. We may have just enough to analyse and correct the things giving you the most trouble.

@queenkobraxx , I totally relate to where you are coming from! I do not have exact physical limitations you have described but many others. Physical limitations aside, I found in my journey that my mindset was 1000 times more important than any physical advantage I was born with (or not) or had be removed by circumstance. When I freed myself of the burden of “I can’t because…..” my physical limitations mattered less. I was able to take accurate stock of where I was without the cloud of “this is too hard” or “I can’t because…” obscuring the reality of what it took for me to learn to play. Here I found the rock solid launch pad from which I could nurture desire and allow my desire to play overcome my physical limitations. This combined with the clear direction I found with Tony P. and the TAC program emphasis on mindset “fun and focus fuels progress” has put me in a place as a player I would never have thought possible six years ago. My mindset was my problem. It was not my physical limitations. When I freed my mind my fingers followed.

Looking forward to hearing more from you about your journey. I wish you fast progress toward your goals.

its how I leaned them @Greg_F_Lee , the great thing is it takes less and less time to get things down these days and not just the lessons but any other playing too. I remember it being pretty time intensive for a while and then the time to learn gets shorter and shorter in a surprising way. It was if critical mass was achieved and the door just opened.

@davefive , Bob Ross used to say that all the time. So much Bob Ross wisdom seems to apply to my music journey and as soon as I figure out how that saying applies I will be sure to let you in on the revelation.

Ps. In case it wasn’t obvious I am a huge B.R. fan. I mean seriously who has hair like that and gets away with it….okay Don Henley but that’s it. And if @Fletch finds a picture on the internet of someone that looks like me with that same hair I can assure you it is not me….I swear.
