@Adustin , I encourage you to begin the habit of hitting the daily lesson with the 10 minute goal in mind. Not sure where you are in your journey but these lessons can be broken down to very basic components where even someone brand new can find success and benefit from the 10 minute exercise routine. Often the 10 minutes then leads to playing for longer (so I’ve heard) and playing is fun. Even on the toughest of days 10 minutes is doable. The beauty I found in the lesson structure is there is nothing to think about, no worry, just pick up the guitar and follow the instruction. I am never behind and never ahead, I am just there in the moment doing my 10 minutes.

I am hoping that felt really good for you to not only overcome the low motivation but also as you were ending you were benefiting from the results of your effort and that the time spent was happily spent and heartily enjoyed. Keep on keepin on @slovett , I am going to do the same.

Hi @darcelle , When do you most notice the squeak? Is it every time you move or is it only at certain times, between certain positions?

@MarcheM , I relate strongly to your story especially when you said, “But I didn’t just want someone to tell me where to put my fingers, I wanted to know why.” That moment when I reached the same conclusion was a turning point in my journey. The other thing that caught my eye was when you said,… “I understand the guitar fretboard. Now I know why my noodling sounds good. It’s called triads.” My coming around to this idea and even more basic than the triads themselves it the power of thirds and their relationship to each other. Love your story!!! TAC=FUN, TAC+FUN=Success(aka progress toward goal)

Hi @SuzyQ , if you post a video of your playing ( you only need to show your hands) we would be able to help you figure it out. Without knowing where you are it is hard to show you where you should go.

physical descriptions of guitar playing, notes, string locations etc., has always confused me. At the top of the guitar we have the headstock so when I go up the neck am I going toward the head or am I going toward the direction of the tail block and yet raising the pitch. And I can’t even imagine what it would be like talking to Elizabeth Cotton on her string choices….

Coupla things come to mind, I think you are right re. string type,…that is one piece of the puzzle. I also think you are right regarding your chord shape moving and leaving enough pressure on the strings for that squeak sound to become noticable. Especially noticeable with bar chords. There is also a finger texture component as well. The harder my callouses get the less sound they make but again that is when they are on the tips. There is also a speed of transition component. The shorter your transition the less time for the string to squeak. Have you experimented with keeping pressure on your chord while you slide. It gives that slight feel of chromatic sliding but may be preferable to the squeak? It takes some time but you can develop the touch to move up and down the fretboard without contacting the strings. Tension management is fairly critical as you develop that touch accuracy.

Hope you get to a good solution.

@dr_dave , did you try clicking on your name in the top header, next to your round profile pic icon? When I do that a drop down box is revealed, the sixth choice on the list is the “Member Search” and the Third choice down is “My Messages” I have been able to successfully look up quite a few folks there on account of the change in nickname structure. It is slow so patients is helpful but for me it is slow in !0s of seconds not minutes wize.

@dr_dave , it is in my youtube history but I am not the creator of the video so it will stay in “my” youtube history file as long as I don’t delete it but if Tony decides he wants to remove it, he does controls that. I don’t see any reason why he would want to remove it so I think we are good for the foreseeable future.

  • “The other day I was at the beach laying in the sand and I musta looked pretty rough ’cause a group of people came up who were kinda overdressed seeing that we were at the beach and they gathered around me and asked if they could pray for me. Now I am not much into the religion thing but am pretty connected to god so I said sure, and they formed a circle around me and held hands and commenced to pray and I was thinkin’ how cool it was but how weird it was and then I started to look around the beach and no one else at the beach was watching and then I began to suspect the prayer people were not real and then I saw a little girl and she walked through the circle and said to me ” Don’t worry the prayer people are real” and I thought whoa, she knows what I am thinking, but its all good, and then she took my hand and said. “But I am not””
