  1. Hello to all!

I recorded an audio introduction, as well as my “melody”, but haven’t yet figured out where to upload them to… in the meantime for the assignment:

My Project is in the Key of D
    Progression is 1 2 5 4 1 (D, Em, A, G, D)

For the performance, I transposed it to the Key of G
    Progression in G of 1 2 5 4 1 is G, Am, D, C, G

    My “Melody” is:
    G G B G
    A A C A
    D D A A
    C C E G
    G G B D B G

Hopefully I can figure out where to upload these to… and hopefully this will count for completion of this awesome course. Thanks so much!

    Stephen

  2. I can’t seem to find the forum for Fretboard Wizard? I was there before but can’t find it now. I’m guessing it’s staring me right in the face but any help is appreciated. Thanks!!

    1. Chuck,

No worries, click on the fretboard wizard course and within that there is a link to “forum” (which is not on the side bar) this will give you access to the FW forums 🙂

      Cheers,
      Tony

  3. I have posted this on the Challenge for Lesson 6 but not here. Hopefully this will show that I have completed the course!

    Fellow Fretboard classmates!

Please enjoy my little ditty about my dog Honey.

It is in G and transposed to D

The Chord Matrix for those Chords is as follows:
    1 2 3 4 5 6 7 dim
    M m m M M M m
    W W h W W W h
    G A B C D E F#
    D E F# G A B C#

    Triad 1-4-5-6
    1 3 5 1 4 5 6
    G B D G C D E
    D F A D G A B
    M m M M M M m

Being my first time ….it is rather simple. Chords in G are ones I especially like. Once I learn my G scale I’ll better be able to write down the melody

    “She’s My Little Honey”

    G/D C/G G/D D/A
Verse Have you heard or seen my Honey she’s my hearts delight

    G/D C/G G/D D/A G/D
When she’s with me I’m so happy She’s my sassy girl

    Chorus G/D C/G G/D D7/A7
She’s my Honey Yes my Honey she’s my Honey Girl

    G/D C/G G/D D7/A7 G/D
    She’s a cutie a real patootie she’s a my hearts delight

    Verse2 G/D C/G G/D D/A
When she sees me the way she greets me makes a real sight

    G/D C/G G/D D/A G/D
She’s my Honey Yes my Honey she’s my Honey Girl

    Chorus

    Verse3 G/D C/G G/D D/A
She’s my Honey Yes my Honey she’s my Honey Girl

    G/D C/G G/D D/A G/D
When she’s with me I’m so happy She’s my little girl

Melody – STILL working on this

    Notes: G C D B G A B C D F# A G

    D
    A 3 3 3 3 555 2 2222 3333 555 0
    G 3 3 3 3 3 5 2 3

After completing the course I wanted to be certain I understand the material so I created 2 pages of what I think I have learned. the first page is of the rules for the chord matrix as I understand it and the second, the Chord Matrix and a shortened list of the rules….a little cheat sheet….or as I prefer to call it, a refresher for making all clear. I am not quite sure I understand purpose of the 1-3-5 possibly tonality? I will be going back and reviewing. I do believe all chords contain the one and three….but not always the 5. Any help here is appreciated.

  4. For the final project I wrote some chord progressions in the key of D minor. I usually never write for singing but for playing a kind of melody type guitar solo with it.
    First progression: D m – Bb – F – C which is i-VI-iii-VII
    Second is D m – Gm – C which is i – iv – VII
    Third is D m – Bb – C – A which is i – VI – VII – and A comes from the F Major III
    Fourth is D m – Bb – A which is i – VI – and III from F Major

I am not sure why switching between the A minor and A Major works but I just like the way it sounds at the end.

    Transposing to A minor: Am – F – C – G —- Am – Dm – G —– Am – F – C – E ——- Am – F – E
To me it is hard sometimes to get the same mood or sound by changing the progression to a different key. D might sound differently than E because of it’s position on the guitar neck and how the chords move on the neck from higher string positions to low. I think it is great to play the same chords but in different positions on the neck to maybe find the way you want the song to feel to use and maybe to others. I used the natural minor scale notes: D- E- F- G- A- Bb- C
Natural minor key chord sequence: min- dim- maj- min- min- maj- maj
i iidim III iv v VI VII
    Dmin – Edim – Fmaj – Gmin – Amin – Bbmaj – Cmaj

  5. Hi Guys

I’d just like to also thank you for this awesome course, it’s really helped me understand a lot of things I’d heard of but never dared to explore – I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it!!

  6. Hey, Tony,
This course was incredible. It has really changed my life. I’ve been doing the daily practices in TAC since February and just following along as best I could with whatever you were laying out string by string, plucking or picking as instructed. Then I signed up for Fretboard Wizard and my gosh, everything I’ve been doing for 3 months is starting to make sense.

It’s like learning a foreign language, conversation only, then having the conjugation make sense or learning the books step by step when suddenly the ‘big picture’ presents itself. Amazing!!

So again, many thanks to you and your wonderful team, Noah, Levi , Maggie and whom ever else is behind the scenes. Would love to know how this vision of community came to you and how you implemented it. It’s truly a work of art.

    Cheers,
    Kate H

  7. Hi Tony:-), I got so excited about doing the Module 5 Challenge I forgot to leave a comment lol:-). I just want to a huge thank you for this awesome course:-). I can’t believe how much fun this has been and this has changed my whole approach to listening to music and playing the guitar:-). I’ve been writing a few songs with my new found music theory skills and it has made a huge impact:-). I no longer spend hours flapping about on the fretboard trying to find chords that work in a progression lol:-).
Also I am having a lot fun working out the CAGED system:-).
Thank you Tony, Levi and Noah for all your hard work that has gone into Fretboard Wizard and TAC:-).

  8. Final project was a very good way to pull so much together. Now if I can just learn how to use Garage Band to record backing loops, record melody over top and then maybe go to photoshop to record the whole thing but I’ll have to take Macboard Wizzard first:(

    Key of C:
    chord progression: G Am D Dsus2 D
melody: DDBG ACEA DF#AC DEAD DF#AD

Nashville: 5 6 2 2sus 2 (may have just made up that part about 2sus)

    Transposition to Key of G:
chord progression: D Em Am Asus Am
melody: DDF#A EGBE ACEA ABEA ACEA

  9. Here goes…
    “Karen” by Nick Burn.
    Key of G.
    1’st verse chord progression:
    G-C-D-G
    G-C-D-G
    G-C-D-G
    G-C-D-G (not particularly challenging…NN system: 1-4-5-1)
    Chorus:
    C-G-D-G
    C-G-D-G
    C-G-D-G
    C-G-D-G (NN system: 4-1-5-1)
    2’nd verse chord progression…same as the 1’st
3’rd verse change to key of A:
    A-D-E-A
    A-D-E-A
    A-D-E-A
    A-D-E-A
    Final chorus also in A:
    D-A-E-A
    D-A-E-A
    D-A-E-A
    D-A-E-A

There are lyrics for the whole song which I hope you will hear when I can figure out how to record and post.

    Cheers!

  10. Heret it is then my final project. Written in Key of D, Chord Progression Verse 1 is D A G A D, Thereafter D A G A Em
I’ve transposed it to Key of G, Nashville Number System Verse 1 15451, thereafter 15452 or GDCDG, then GDCD Am
When I first picked a guitar up in January, I never dreamed I’d be songwriting. Thank you Tony

      1. Thank you Tony. I was going to go straight into the key change to G but I think anymore of my singing may have resulted me being blocked hehe. I’ve learned an incredible amount in the last month, You are an inspirational teacher. I’m looking forward to Wednesday but may be a tad late. Got to rush back from a drum lesson.

    1. Andy just heard your song. It’s good! It is put together very nicely. I like that you had two breaks with solos that were perfect for the chord progression. Your vocals were good, don’t stop singing. Know that your dad always loved you!!

  11. Here we go! Final project. I wrote the lyrics and added notes a while back, but after taking this FW course, I decided to change the chords and go with the key of G. My note progression is G Em Am Em. According to the Nashville number system it would be 1 6 2 6. Transposing to the key of C, I came up with a chord progression of C Am Dm Am. Anyway, for the melody on the G chord I am picking the low E, A, D, A strings then strumming once. Is this the right approach? I used the same melody in Em and then for Am I picked the A, D, G, D as the melody. Like most people I’ve got stage fright and am apprehensive to post a video on the web, but I have recorded a sound version, however I need help uploading it to the discussions. Can someone help? This has been cool and I plan to stay with the TAC moving forward.

    1. Dennis,

Great job on your project, it sounds like all things are clicking and it looks great so far. If you want to share audio, I would recommend uploading your tune to soundcloud and then sharing it on the forum 🙂

      Cheers,
      Tony

  12. Hi Tony, Noah or Levi,
I, too, am having trouble finding the Q&A Replay from yesterday (June1) for Module 5.
    Thanks
    Kate

  13. Hi Tony,

I cannot seem to find the live q&a replay for yesterday (June 1st). Has it been posted in a different location? Thanks.

  15. Hey Tony,

I had to leave early from the Q and A today but I had a question about home recording. I use a presonus interface and then I use Capture on the ipad and fiddle around with Studio One on the PC. In the chat today Noah said he uses the same and some recommended recordingrevolution.com to check out information on mixing and mastering. Do you have any tips on this? Mixing and mastering seems like a big thing to take on…lol

    Thanks!

    Frank

    1. Also, I can’t figure out how to have the video show for my song, I can only post the link? If anyone can help that would be great!

    2. Frank,

Great question, as for mixing and mastering my experience has always been watching someone else do it 🙂 I definitely think it is a worthy topic to explore, but not necessary for rough ideas 🙂

      Cheers,
      Tony

  16. I noodle around all the time on guitar but never write things down. I have a few regular progressions I seem to go back to. I want to take my time with this and I am completely strapped for time right now. My house seems to be a perpetual place for friends and family to spend the weekend. I hope to get to while I’m on my road trip traveling to the jamboree in a few weeks.

    Great course truly enjoyed!

    Cheers!
    Susan

    1. Susan,

I am so glad you enjoyed the course!!! When you get around to putting together a song we would all love to hear it, but no pressure of course 🙂 You could even try it out on the friends and family that come to visit 🙂

      Cheers,
      Tony

  19. LIVE Q&A Question:
    Hi Tony
I have to leave early for my daughter’s pre-prom photo party so I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to ask this on the live session. Can you just briefly cover the dynamics of adding vocals to a song? I know it is basically a melody with a different instrument (voice), but for many of us, the vocal range may be limited. Should I always match the guitar key with my voice (or vice-versa), or is there a better way to approach it?

Thanks again for putting this course together, I’m still behind with the module challenges but have watched all the videos (some multiple times) and caught the Q&A’s. I want to make my way through all the forums for tips and I’ve been selectively watching some of the TAC academy videos to help undo some bad habits I’ve picked up over the years. SO much great info and so little time (I really could use a silent guitar at work or maybe a month off to devote solely to TAC)
    Thanks again
    -Scott

    1. Scott,

Great question, I am really glad you asked!!! I will address this in the live q&a so I will see you on the replay 🙂 I am so glad you are digging the course and that you are working your way through other parts of the academy 🙂 Keep up the awesome work and make sure to catch the replay 🙂

      Cheers,
      Tony

  20. Tony, cool assignment! Question about choosing a key to match one’s vocal range. I have a deep voice with limited range so I started writing my song in the key of A, thinking that would suit my voice because its the “lowest” key. But when I try to sing a melody over that chord i find I’m practically in falsetto territory. When I go to the IV or V chord in A, its even worse. Any tips?

    1. Hi Paul
I’m stuck with limited vocal range as well
Maybe try G or E which start with the lower bass notes. Or you could find the high and low notes of your vocal range on the guitar and then play in the best fitting key and sing one octave below it on the same notes.
      Good luck!
      Scott

    2. Paul,

Great question here 🙂 I would try starting an octave lower, you can do this by singing the same notes just in a lower register. One thing that can help is continuing to capo up (I know this sounds counterintuitive, but just follow me here) once you reach a spot where your starting note is near impossible to hit (meaning it is to high) go up one capo position and try and find the low note that works. This isn’t an “official” work flow but it has helped me in the past 🙂

      Cheers,
      Tony

  21. Hi Tony. Any chance you could do a second Q&A on this module next week? I don’t think I’ll get a chance to make much progress on the challenge by tomorrow. Cheers, Nick.

    1. Nick,

Thank you for asking 🙂 The last FW live q&a will be on June 1st, however there is a TAC member guitar party on June 7th where I would be happy to address questions as well 🙂

      Cheers,
      Tony

  22. I added my tabs for my post of May 30, 2017 at 7:53pm to the Forum but then I had to edit it and when I submitted again it disappeared so I’m going to put it here but it should go with my recording.
That happened before too when I went back in to ‘edit’ opposed to ‘reply’. Just wondering if anyone else experienced a problem with that.
    Anyway, here it;

Well, guess it isn’t. I can’t seem to paste it in here so I’m going back to the Mod 5 forum and put it in there in a new comment box.
    Kate

    1. You got it 🙂 One thing to be careful of is that those notes can also start suggesting other chords so just be aware of that, but by all means experiment away!!!

      Cheers,
      Tony

  24. (I posted this again here after posting similar ? on main page)
    Anyone!
Can we write out the chord matrix, and then add a row for the 7th’s??? below ???
Would this not provide some additional options to pick from when focusing on the notes for one chord?

    1. David,

Absolutely!!! You can get more chordal information when adding another line to the matrix, you can even generate some friendly dissonance 🙂

      Cheers,
      Tony

  25. You guys amaze me with the patience you have with computers, phones, etc. I don’t even have a phone and have zero patience with other devices. Needless to say, I won’t be recording ANYTHING or trying to post it on here – I will write it out.
(Hoping for more patience in my next incarnation …….!!)

  26. I don’t know if I will be able to record this but thought i would write out my project. For the solo or improve iIworked out a melody based solo using the chord tones of the chorus. Was going to try to write some lyrics but then I probably would never get this done. LOL

  27. Still trying to talk myself into thinking I can do this.. whoa.. you just made barre chords look like kid play to me…

  28. This is really challenging. I have some simple music for a verse, that led to words for a whole song (or a song of 131 words), so maybe just a jingle. But, now to pull them together from what we’ve learned here in FW. My music and words are all so elementary, with rhyme’s any grade school rapper would disown. I may not be sharing in fear of total and complete embarrassment but I am committed to getting it done. Thanks all for sharing your inputs and Tony for the guiding light!

Does anyone have a suggestion for the easiest way to record and upload? I have a Dell laptop and an iPhone 6s+. I’ve never done it before but like what I’ve seen on the previous challenge uploads. Thanks!

    1. Hi, Fronz,

I have iPhone 6+ also and I used it to do my recording.
After that it got sketchy and took quite a while to get it into my MacPro laptop. In fact I finally just brought it up on my iPhone, hit share and a list of places to share “to” came up and one of them was YouTube. So that’s how I got to YouTube.

Once there you sign in to your channel and if you have a Google account then you already have a YouTube channel as they merged last year I think. If you don’t then just Google how to open an account and go from there.

Then it’s trial and error from my point of view. I uploaded my video “several” times but never got to the point where the ‘share’ button was under my YouTube video. Finally figured out I had made it “private” in the security parameters so changed it to “public and unlisted” and uploaded it again and finally I was able to share it and copy the link then paste that link into Fretboard Wizard Module 5 Challenge Forum and the video came up when I submitted it.

Hope this helps. I’m sorry I can’t be more concise on how to do it; I just had to feel my way through it and it took forever.

      Good luck!

    2. I used an app called Music Memo from apple that was free and looks like a great tool. Unfortunatley I’m not savvy enough to post the recording but sent it to Noah so maybe he will put it up. Regardless, the app is cool.

    3. Fronz,

No worries at all please feel comfortable sharing if you are inspired to and if not that is totally ok as well 🙂 I just wanted to make sure that everyone going through this course is now empowered with the knowledge of creating their own song based on a solid foundation. As for recording you could use the voice memo app on your phone and then upload it to a service like soundcloud which would allow you to share it with everyone 🙂

      Cheers,
      Tony

  29. I am intimidated by this challenge – mostly because I have no creative imagination to start from – I have hundreds of songs in my head and everything I come up with is part of another song ……. I may go REALLY simple and do a song I made up as a child (even it has some recognizable parts from other songs, but I can probably modify them.) I am really looking forward to this if I can just come up with a place to start …….

  30. Hi Tony.

My jaw just hit the floor.
Looking forward to pick it up and start challenging myself with this final project.

  31. In trying to figure how to go about doing this challenge, I remembered a free Apple app for the iPad called Music Memos. Its a very simple way to record and play back your music ideas. It can figure out the chords your playing, has a builtin tuner, and even turn on a bass and/or drum backing track during playback. I thought I’d mention it in case others might find it useful.

I’m looking forward to doing this challenge because this is why I felt the need to take the Fretboard Wizard course. I want to take the next step from just learning to play songs to creating my own music.

  32. Hey Tony,

I love this project. Question, how would you suggest we record it? I was just going to do a simple video however, that would be hard to do a solo over. Is it better that it not be a video and be done on something like garageband?

    Thanks!

    Frank

    1. Frank,

Great question!!! I would say to whichever extent you wish to take the project record it in a format that supports it. Some have chosen to do a video explaining what they are doing, others do a video and write out the description. There is also the option of making a video performing the solo over the prerecorded rhythm, and of course recording in garageband is totally acceptable as well 🙂 I encourage any format that allows us all to share our musical performances 🙂

      Cheers,
      Tony

  33. Tony, before starting my Final Project, I’m practicing the Bonus sheet you gave us after the Module 4 Q&A: Base Scale Patters (from root to root) and I’m a little confused.

I’m really new to breaking chords into notes…but it seems like the C pattern root to root is actually a D; the A is a B; the G is an A; the E is a G; the D is an E.

Please help me see this in the right light. What am I missing?

    Thanks.
    Kate

    1. Hi Kate I think we have to remember that each of the CAGED shapes are moveable – like barre chords. For the C and A shapes the root note is based on the 5th string, G and E on the 6h string and D on the 4 th string. So in the diagram, for the C shape to make a C scale it needs to move so that the root note on the 5th string is on the 3rd fret. If you moved it up to the 5th fret you would be using the C shape to make a D scale etc. I hope this makes sense and I have got it right!!! I’m sure TonyP or another student will jump in and give a clearer explanation !

      1. Hi Sandy, based on my understanding, you perfectly explained the charakter of shape-movability – sometimes, at the open positions we need to include the nut in our thinking 😉
        cheers, ben

      2. No, your explanation is very clear. Thank you. Kellie answered something very close to this in the 5 Forum and Tony answered here also. John C understands it but I wasn’t able to get it when we were talking. Emma tried too. I feel a bit dense but I’m so happy with this very forgiving community!!

    2. Kate,

Fantastic question here 🙂 Those diagrams are just to show the patterns, they aren’t necessarily assigned to those particular frets. So in essence you can move the root and follow that pattern to achieve any major scale. Each of those patterns are moveable and depending on where you position the root you will be playing that notes major scale 🙂 I hope this helps clear things up and this is something we certainly will go over on Thursday’s live q&a 🙂

      Cheers,
      Tony

      1. Thanks, Tony. I just saw this and thanks so much. I’m beginning to understand. It’s still a little hazy but I can almost see the light-(bulb)! Looking forward to Q&A tomorrow.
        Best,
        Kate

    1. Susanne,

You can do it 🙂 Try your best, and the beautiful thing is you can always circle back around and revisit your song to change it or modify it 🙂

      Cheers,
      Tony

  34. Oh…if I could’a had this course back in 1965…. But seriously Tony, earlier we talked about the circle of fifths…well, back then I was an 11 year-old in Germany taking lessons from a Spanish flamenco player and he taught me the circle of fifths (without the relative minors) right off! Remember (okay, you don’t, but I do) that back in the 60’s, pop and blues was almost always a 1-4-5 progression. So when he gave me that rudimentary knowledge, I could always transpose songs into different keys. As for you, MahaTonyishma, I thank you for taking my knowledge further, taking a very complex theory and simplifying it for the common man that even Steve Earle could understand.

    Happy Trails, brother.

  35. I finished the quiz 4, went back to review the questions and now I can’t mark it complete. Most challenging quiz for me. Had trouble hearing the right melody notes. How can I mark it complete with out having to retake it. I am a little short on time this week.

  36. Hi Tony,
I just finished quiz 4, I wanted to review all the lesson a little before trying the quiz.
It took a little while on the first attempt and I had some trouble with the chord based
    or melody based questions.
    I got it on the second try, 20 out of 20 : – )
I feel the process everyday and I’m loving it.
My practice is more focused than ever, and I think I’m over the hump as I like to call it.
I have gotten to a level that will make me excited to continue until I’m as good as you!
    LOL
    Thanks again Tony

    1. James,

Great work and commitment!!! I am glad you are feeling progress and that you are gaining confidence in your newly acquired knowledge 🙂 Keep it up!!!

      Cheers,
      Tony

  37. Another good quiz.. Have learned quite a bit in these courses. The only thing I have trouble with is hearing the proper notes for the vocals as well as the chord changes in the quiz songs. I get the Key no problem but then have trouble with the rest, like when to move to the next chord or note in the song. Even after the correct answer is given it sometimes doesn’t sound correct to me when played with the song. I guess it comes with practice.

    1. Michael,

It does indeed to take time to tune your ear to hearing changes and melody notes. I would recommend sitting with finding the key for a while and really refine that skill, once you have that down inside and out you may find it easier to pick up on changes. I hope this helps 🙂

      Cheers,
      Tony

  38. Hey Tony,

Me again! LOL. So this quiz I must say humbled me in a good way. For some reason my brain is having trouble wrapping around if you are trying to improvise in this key and then playing over this chord. When I see that for some reason, I am not sure which way to go. I’m going to watch the video again, but any tips?

    Thanks!

    Frank

    1. Frank,

This is a great question and a common point of confusion 🙂 The beautiful thing is that generally speaking the melody is composed of chord tones, and if you wish to improvise you can use the chord tones as your guide posts. So in essence they are one in the same. I hope this helps 🙂

      Cheers,
      Tony

  39. Wow! I scored 20/20 in just under an hour. I can’t believe how much I’ve learned in this course. I’m getting faster at identifying the key and chords and was able to pick up the first note/notes of the melody fairly readily. Also getting a bit quicker with the chord matrix and using a couple of short cuts to get the melody going. I’ve convinced myself over the years that I don’t have an ear for music and could never create a solo, but I can definitely see paths forward. Thanks Tony.

  40. This quiz felt pretty straightforward. I have trouble hearing an F# apparently and getting the first 5 notes was challenging. My biggest barrier is knowing what note I’m playing. I get the shapes right but am very challenged to quickly identify or even confidently know what the note name is on the fret.

I also don’t know my musical notation on the staff sheets…I have such a long way to go. But, I am way further along than I was just 3 weeks ago!

    Thanks!

  41. I’ve attempted this lesson three times today and still I cannot get the concept of the notes to the melodies in those songs. Not to mention that you can’t replay them once they have ended, making it difficult to pick the correct answer. I did have better success and figuring out the chords utilizing the matrix method. That’s about all the success I have had with this exercise.

    1. Chris,
I too find it difficult. Are you starting by trying to find the key of the song? If not, start there. I’m guessing you are since you are writing out the chord matrix. That’s what I have to do, too. The matrix helps a lot. I think with practice, it will get easier to do it without writing out the matrix.
      Kellie

    2. Chris I don’t know what system you’re running but this is what worked on my Apple when I had the sound bar repeat problem. I’m assuming you have a sidebar with icons, pick an icon, highlight it and wait for the page to come up. Once the page is up use whatever your computer uses to take you back to the “Previous page”, it may be something as simple as a back-arrow. Should this work on your system the sound bar will reset to “0” (without loosing any of the test) and you should be able to replay the piece. Good luck and hang in!

  42. This IS getting easier. I am still amazed that I have found the keys to the musical universe. So grateful for your clear direction Tony, thank you.
